Chapter 2 - The Shattered Facade

The heavy silence in the Grand Alcazar’s opulent foyer felt heavier than lead.
Around them, elite guests whispered behind gloved hands and designer lapels, their eyes darting between the titan of European real estate and the exhausted, pregnant housekeeper standing in a charcoal-grey uniform. To anyone else, it was a scandalous piece of morning gossip. To Julian Rossi, it was an earthquake tearing apart the foundation of his reality.
Camila’s face flushed a furious, mottled crimson. The emerald gown that had radiated elegance moments ago now felt like armor in a losing battle. She stepped forward, her heels clicking sharply against the polished onyx.
“Julian, this is absurd,” Camila hissed, her voice vibrating with insulted vanity. “Some unverified employee is having a nervous breakdown, and you’re halting the entire lobby. Let the concierge handle it. We have a couples massage waiting on the penthouse level.”
Julian didn't even look at her. His dark, piercing gaze remained locked entirely on Elena.
Every instinct he possessed—the ruthless intuition that had allowed him to build a multi-billion-dollar empire from the ground up—told him something was catastrophically wrong. Elena was not the kind of woman to abandon a home on a whim. She was meticulous, proud, and fiercely loyal. When she vanished eight months ago without a single trace, leaving behind an empty bed and a sealed envelope containing unsigned divorce papers, Julian had felt his heart turn to ice. He had convinced himself she was cold, calculating, and ungrateful.
Looking at her now—with her hollowed cheeks, raw fingers, and the unmistakable, rounded swell of a late-term pregnancy hidden beneath an oversized uniform—the illusion shattered into a million jagged pieces.
She wasn't gone by choice. She was trapped.
“Elena,” Julian repeated, ignoring Camila entirely as he stepped past the velvet rope divider. “Look at me. Who did this to you?”
Elena’s jaw tightened. Her dark eyes flashed with a sudden, desperate panic that she instantly forced down beneath a mask of absolute, professional numbness.
“Sir, you are creating a disturbance,” Elena said, her voice trembling despite her best efforts to keep it steady. “If you do not step back, I will be forced to call hotel security.”
“Security?” Julian let out a dark, humorless laugh that echoed off the Baccarat chandeliers. “In this hotel, I am the security, Elena. Who put you in this uniform? Who took your passport? Who has been keeping you here?”
Before Elena could answer, a frantic voice cut through the tension.
“Mr. Rossi! Mr. Rossi, please forgive this dreadful misunderstanding!”
Director Victor Vance, the general manager of the Grand Alcazar, practically sprinted across the lobby, his face drenched in nervous sweat, his bespoke suit wrinkled from panic. He positioned himself squarely between Julian and Elena, offering a desperate, sickly smile.
“Mr. Vance,” Julian’s voice dropped to a lethal, arctic hum. “Explain why my wife—my legally wedded wife whom I have spent eight months searching the globe for—is pushing a cleaning cart in your lobby.”
Victor swallowed hard, his Adam’s apple bobbing violently. “Sir... Mrs. Rossi... she sought employment here under a private contractor agreement. It’s... it’s all completely legal. Personnel records show—"
“Personnel records can be forged,” Julian interrupted, stepping so close to the manager that Victor instinctively recoiled. “And if I find out that anyone in this hotel laid a hand on her, or coerced her into this degradation, I will personally strip this resort down to its concrete foundations before the sun sets.”
Camila let out a sharp gasp, stepping back as if Julian had suddenly contracted a plague.
“Julian, I’ve had enough of this psychotic delusion!” Camila shouted, her voice echoing off the onyx walls. “You dragged me here for a romantic weekend, and you’re making a scene over a common maid! If you don't walk away from this pathetic woman right now, we are done. Completely done!”
Julian slowly turned his head to look at Camila. The cold indifference in his eyes made her breath catch.
“You were finished the second you opened your mouth, Camila,” Julian said quietly. “My driver is waiting outside. Have him take you back to your apartment. Send me your receipts for the trip; I’ll reimburse you. We’re over.”
“You—!” Camila stammered, humiliated in front of the entire elite clientele of the Grand Alcazar. With a furious sob, she ripped her diamond tennis bracelet off her wrist, threw it at Julian’s feet, and stormed out through the revolving doors.
Julian didn't even glance down at the glittering diamonds.
He turned back to Elena, only to find her pushing her cart backward toward the service elevators with desperate haste.
“Elena, wait!” Julian ordered, lunging forward.
“Don't follow me, Julian!” Elena cried out, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she gripped her swollen belly with one hand and the cart handle with the other. “If you care about me—if you care about this baby—stay away from me! They’re watching!”
The elevator doors slid shut before Julian could reach her, sealing her away in the belly of the hotel.
Julian stood frozen in the center of the lobby, his fists clenched so tightly that his knuckles turned white.

“They’re watching.”
Who was they? And what kind of monster had driven his pregnant wife into hiding right under his nose?
