Chapter 8 - The Ghost in the Cell

Two years after the trial.
Inside the high-security federal correctional facility in Terre Haute, Indiana, Silas Vance sat in a cold, sterile visitation room.
His hands were cuffed to a heavy steel ring mounted on the concrete table. He wore a faded orange jumpsuit, his hair was completely gray, and his eyes were sunken from two years of living under the strict, unforgiving discipline of federal prison.
The heavy steel door opened, and his public defender stepped inside, carrying a thick legal envelope.
"Do you have news on my sentence reduction?" Silas asked eagerly, his voice raspy and desperate. "Did Elena sign the pardon letter? Did she agree to let me see Clara?!"
The attorney let out a tired, heavy sigh as he sat down across from him.
"Elena Osei has not responded to any of your letters, Silas," the attorney said flatly. "And she never will. All your petitions have been permanently denied by the court."
The lawyer pulled a shiny luxury magazine from his envelope and laid it flat on the steel table.
It was the anniversary issue of Forbes Magazine.
On the front cover was a gorgeous, radiant photo of me standing on the rooftop helipad of Osei Global Headquarters in Chicago. I wore a red power suit, holding three-year-old Clara in my arms. Standing right beside us was Julian, who had recently become my fiancé, and my father, Marcus, looking proud and powerful.
The headline read: OSEI GLOBAL CROSSES $10 BILLION VALUATION: ELENA OSEI CREATES THE SAFEST TECH EMPIRE IN THE WORLD.
"She turned the technology you tried to steal into a global empire," the attorney told Silas, his voice completely devoid of pity. "Your name has been legally erased from every patent, every document, and every record related to her daughter. Clara doesn't even know you exist."
Silas stared at the photograph—at my glowing, radiant smile, at his daughter's happy, healthy face, and at the strong, loving family that had replaced him entirely.
A single, bitter tear ran down his hollow cheek, dripping onto the cold steel table.
"I had everything..." Silas whispered, his voice trembling with agonizing regret. "I had everything, and I threw it away for nothing..."

"You had a queen, Silas," the lawyer said as he gathered his papers and stood up to leave. "But you acted like a beggar. Now you get to live like one."
The heavy iron door slammed shut, locking Silas back into his darkness forever.
