Chapter 5 - The Gift of Life

While Silas and Odalys were being swallowed whole by the federal justice system, I was fighting the most important battle of my life.
Inside the state-of-the-art operating theater at my father’s private medical compound, a team of six elite obstetric surgeons worked tirelessly around my bed.
The trauma from Odalys’s attack had forced an emergency C-section.
“BP is stabilizing! Fetal heart rate is 110 and climbing!” the lead surgeon announced.
I lay on the operating table under light anesthesia, tears slipping down my temples into my hair. My body was battered, my ribs throbbed with every breath, but my mind was completely focused on one thing.
Please, God. Save my baby.
A minute later, a sharp, tiny, magnificent cry echoed through the sterile room.
Waaaaah! Waaaaah!
The sound was pure liquid gold. It shattered the lingering darkness of the hospital room, filling my heart with an overwhelming wave of joy that washed away every tear I had ever shed for Silas Vance.
“It’s a girl!” the surgeon smiled, wiping the baby clean and wrapping her in a warm, cream-colored blanket. “Thirty-three weeks, four pounds eight ounces, but her lungs are strong and her reflexes are perfect!”
They laid her gently against my chest.
She had a head of soft dark hair, tiny pink cheeks, and bright, clear eyes that opened wide as she felt the warmth of my skin.
“Clara...” I sobbed softly, kissing her warm forehead. “Clara... you made it. Mommy’s here.”
The heavy operating room door opened, and my father walked in, wearing sterile scrubs over his suit.
The legendary, terrifying underworld boss—the man who had just dismantled two multi-million-dollar corporations in a single night—stood beside my bed, looking down at his newborn granddaughter with tears shining in his eyes.
“Dad...” I whispered, looking up at him.
Marcus dropped to his knees beside my bed, gently taking my hand in his calloused palms and pressing a soft, trembling kiss against my knuckles.
“I’m sorry, Elena,” my father choked out, his voice cracking with emotion. “I’m so sorry I let you marry that monster. I’m sorry I stayed in the shadows for so long.”
“You saved us, Dad,” I smiled through my tears, guiding his hand so his fingers gently touched tiny Clara’s back. “You saved both of us.”

My father looked at little Clara, a soft, devoted smile spreading across his face.
“Nobody will ever hurt either of you again, my sweet girl,” Marcus promised softly. “I give you my word as an Osei.”
