Chapter 6 - The Fall of the House of Vance

Six months later.
The criminal trial of Silas Vance and Odalys Crane became the most explosive media circus in the nation’s history.
The media dubbed it the "Corporate Betrayal Trial."
I sat in the front row of the gallery inside the Federal District Court in Chicago, wearing a stunning white tailored dress, my hair styled in soft, elegant waves. Beside me sat my father, Marcus, looking impeccably sharp in a navy suit, and Nurse Priya, who had accepted a position as the head of my new charitable foundation.
In my lap sat six-month-old Clara, dressed in a tiny yellow sundress, giggling as she played with a silver rattle.
Across the courtroom, Silas and Odalys sat at separate defense tables, wearing bright orange county jail jumpsuits. Their hands and ankles were bound in heavy steel chains.
Silas looked hollow, gaunt, and completely aged. His polished executive image had vanished, replaced by the desperate look of a man who realized he was going to spend the best years of his life behind iron bars. Odalys refused to look up from the table, her face pale and drawn.
When I took the witness stand, holding Clara in my arms, the courtroom went dead silent.
I answered every question from the Federal Prosecutor with absolute clarity, calm authority, and unwavering strength.
“Mrs. Vance—or Ms. Osei, as you have legally reclaimed your maiden name—” the prosecutor asked gently, “can you identify the woman who attacked you in your hospital room?”
I turned my head slowly, looking directly at Odalys.
“She sits right there,” I said, my voice resonating clearly through the courtroom speakers. “She locked my door, disabled my nurse call button, and struck my pregnant body with a belt while attempting to force me to surrender my child and my company.”
Odalys buried her face in her hands, weeping hysterically.
Next, the prosecution played Exhibit A: the internal surveillance footage recovered from the hospital’s master servers—footage my father’s intelligence team had restored after Silas tried to erase it.
The jury watched in absolute horror as Odalys’s brutal attack was displayed in high definition, followed by audio recordings of Silas bragging on the phone about how he was going to steal my company and leave me with nothing.
The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.
When the verdict was read, Judge Patricia Williams did not hold back her righteous fury:
Odalys Crane: Guilty of Attempted Murder of an Unborn Child, Aggravated Assault, and Extortion. Sentenced to 25 Years in Federal Prison without parole.
Silas Vance: Guilty of Corporate Embezzlement, Wire Fraud, Conspiracy to Commit Murder, and Tax Evasion. Sentenced to 35 Years in Maximum Security Federal Penitentiary.
As the bailiffs moved in to lead Silas away, he broke down, turning toward me and screaming over the noise of the courtroom.
“Elena! Please! Forgive me! Think of Clara! She needs her father!”

I looked at him with cool, absolute indifference, resting my hand over my daughter’s ears so his pathetic screams wouldn't disturb her peace.
“She already has a father,” I murmured, looking over at my dad. “And a real family.”
