Chapter 3 - Red Horizon

The emergency backup generators at St. Jude’s Hospital kicked in with a low, rhythmic hum, flooding the hallways with eerie red night-lights.

Odalys clutched her phone, standing alone in the dim corridor outside my room. "Silas? Silas, can you hear me?"

Static hissed through her receiver, followed by a dark, metallic click.

A voice she didn't recognize came through Silas's line—a voice cold enough to freeze blood.

"Silas Vance is currently indisposed," the voice said calmly. "And you, Ms. Crane, have precisely four minutes before my perimeter team reaches your floor."

Odalys gasped, dropping her phone. It bounced off the linoleum floor.

Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the end of the intensive care hallway were kicked open with explosive force. Four men in unmarked black tactical gear, carrying suppressed submachine guns and wearing night-vision visors, swept into the corridor with terrifying, silent efficiency.

"Target identified. Odalys Crane," the lead operative announced into his throat mic.

Odalys let out a blood-curdling shriek. She threw her leather handbag at them, turned on her heels, and sprinted toward the service elevators. She slammed her thumb against the call button, her heart pounding against her ribs like a trapped bird.

Inside my room, Nurse Priya and Dr. Aris were shielding my bed.

The door to my room swung open softly. But it wasn't a doctor.

It was Viktor. The giant scarred man stepped inside, instantly lowering his weapon and raising a polite, gloved hand toward the medical staff.

"Dr. Aris. Nurse Priya," Viktor said with a surprisingly polite, gravelly accent. "Please remain calm. We are here on behalf of Mr. Marcus Osei. Mrs. Elena Vance will be transferred immediately to a private facility."

"You can't move her!" Dr. Aris shouted bravely, stepping in front of my gurney. "She’s thirty-three weeks pregnant! She’s experiencing placental trauma!"

"A mobile surgical unit led by the Chief of Trauma at Johns Hopkins is waiting on the helipad," Viktor replied smoothly. "Along with her father."

My eyes fluttered open. The pain beneath my ribs was a dull, burning roar, but hearing my father's name brought a wave of electricity back into my veins.

"Viktor..." I rasped, recognition flashing through my mind. I remembered him. He was the man who used to drop off vintage car parts at my dad's garage when I was a teenager. I had thought he was just a delivery guy.

"Rest, little bird," Viktor smiled softly, stepping to the side of my bed and gently patting my shoulder with his massive gloved hand. "The Boss is home."

Outside on the hospital helipad, a massive black Sikorsky helicopter touched down, its rotor blades whipping the cold night air into a whirlwind.

The side door slid open.

Marcus Osei stepped out. He was no longer wearing his grease-stained mechanic jumpsuit. He wore a bespoke charcoal wool overcoat over a dark suit, his eyes sharp as flint, carrying an aura of absolute, terrifying authority.

Two tactical operatives dragged Odalys out onto the roof. She was screaming, her hair wildly tossed by the helicopter wind, her hands zip-tied behind her back.

When she saw my father stepping toward her, she sneered through her terror.

"You're... you're her father?!" she yelled over the roar of the engines. "You're just a filthy mechanic! Do you know who Silas is?! Do you know what his lawyers will do to you?!"

Marcus stopped two feet away from her. He looked down at her with pure, unadulterated disgust.

He didn't hit her. He didn't even raise his voice.

"You struck my pregnant daughter with a leather belt," Marcus said softly, his voice piercing through the thunder of the helicopter blades. "You threatened my unborn granddaughter."

He leaned down until his eyes were level with hers.

"Your company, Crane Public Relations, was liquidated ten minutes ago," Marcus murmured. "Your brother's law firm in New York was shut down by the IRS at 8:00 PM. Your parents' estate in Florida has just been placed under federal lien. By morning, your entire bloodline will be bankrupt, disgraced, and homeless."

Odalys went entirely white. The smug arrogance that had sustained her for months shattered into tiny, irrecoverable pieces.

May you like

"No... no, please!" she sobbed, falling to her knees on the cold concrete. "It was Silas! Silas told me to do it! He promised me half the company!"

"Take her to the basement at Site B," Marcus ordered flatly, turning his back on her. "Let her wait there until the federal marshals arrive to process her for attempted murder."
