Chapter 9 - Healing the Broken

Six months later.
The dark clouds that had hung over the Moretti estate for years had finally vanished. Victoria and Dominic were serving long federal prison sentences, their influence completely wiped from New York.
The estate had been transformed. The gloomy, heavy drapes were replaced with bright glass walls opening into lush gardens. The medical wing was turned into a state-of-the-art rehabilitation center for children from low-income families, fully funded by the Vance Foundation.
I stood on the back veranda, watching the afternoon sun cast a warm golden glow across the lawn.
Lily was chasing a golden retriever puppy near the fountain, laughing hysterically.
And right behind her, without a walker, without braces, was Sofia.
She ran—shaky at first, but determined—her tiny shoes pressing firmly into the grass. She took ten steps, twenty steps, before laughing and tumbling safely into Elena’s arms, who was sitting on the grass with her arms wide open.
I walked down the marble steps and sat down on the grass beside them.

Sofia climbed into my lap, hugging my neck tightly. "Look, Daddy! I caught Elena!"
"I saw, my brave girl," I said, kissing her forehead. "You’re faster than the wind."
