Chapter 2 - The Proof in the Pixels

Lily’s small, clear voice rang out through the vaulted foyer of the estate, freezing every guard in their tracks.
"Grandma put it there."
My mother, Victoria Moretti, stiffened. Her manicured hand trembled slightly around the silver chain of my late wife’s diamond necklace, but her face quickly hardened into a mask of righteous indignation.
"Adrian," Victoria snapped, her voice trembling with false betrayal. "Are you going to listen to the ramblings of a three-year-old child? The woman is a thief. She manipulated your daughter into telling lies!"
Elena stood rooted to the spot near the base of the grand staircase. She didn't cry. She didn't scream. She simply kept her gaze fixed on my daughters, standing defensively in front of Sofia as if protecting my child from the darkness in the room.
"Marco," I said softly, my voice cutting through the rising tension like a straight razor.
My security chief stepped forward immediately. "Sir?"
"Pull up the live feed archive from the nursery camera," I commanded, pulling my personal tablet from my suit jacket. "Camera 04. Timestamp: 6:15 AM today."
Victoria’s breath caught in her throat. Her face drained of all color. "Adrian, this is absurd! You don't need to check—"
"Silence!" I roared. The sound echoed off the marble walls so violently that two of the armed guards visibly flinched.
I tapped the screen. The high-definition video feed loaded instantaneously.
On the tablet screen, the nursery was bathed in early morning light. Sofia was lying on her therapy mat while Elena was in the adjacent kitchenette preparing her morning warm milk.
At 6:18 AM, the heavy oak door of the nursery pushed open. Victoria entered quietly. She walked directly to the coat rack near the entrance, pulled open Elena’s worn winter jacket, and slipped the diamond necklace into the inner pocket. She then looked around the room, unaware of the wide-angle 4K lens concealed inside the grandfather clock in the corner.
I turned the tablet around and held it inches from my mother’s face.
"Care to explain this, Mother?" I asked, my voice chillingly calm.

Victoria swallowed hard, backing away from the screen. "I... I did it for us, Adrian! This girl... she’s dangerous! She’s filling Sofia’s head with impossible hopes! She’s making you soft! Someone had to put her in her place!"
"She didn't fill my daughter's head with impossible hopes," I said, walking slowly toward her until my shadow completely engulfed her. "She made my daughter walk."
