Chapter 7 - The Cleansing of High Society

The ripple effect of Isabella Rossi’s downfall swept through the upper echelons of Chicago society like a category-five hurricane.
For years, the city’s elite had operated on a currency of whispered gossip, superficial alliances, and carefully guarded secrets. People like Isabella thrived in those gray areas, using charm and manipulation to climb the social ladder while stepping on whoever happened to be in their way.
That era ended the morning the security footage went public.
In upscale country clubs along Lake Michigan, in the high-end art galleries of River North, and in the private dining rooms of Michelin-starred restaurants, the only topic of conversation was the Thorne family tragedy—and how quickly Isabella’s so-called "friends" distanced themselves from her.
People who had invited her to exclusive galas just forty-eight hours prior now pretended they had barely known her. Social media posts praising her fashion choices were frantically deleted. PR agencies that had represented her scrubbed her portfolio from their websites as if she had never existed.
Behind the scenes, Uncle Richard and Victor Vance were orchestrating a systematic financial audit of every enterprise Isabella had ever touched.
It turned out her lavish lifestyle—the designer dresses, the luxury sports car, the downtown penthouse condo—was built on a house of cards financed by embezzled funds from boutique PR contracts and illicit kickbacks from competing corporate rivals trying to gain insider intelligence on Thorne Industries.
By Friday afternoon, the civil courts had granted a total asset forfeiture order.
A team of federal marshals and court-appointed liquidators marched into Isabella’s luxury condominium, boxing up her designer handbags, her custom shoes, and her jewelry collection to be auctioned off to pay legal restitution and punitive damages awarded to Khloe Thorne.
Meanwhile, back at the Thorne estate in the quiet, heavily guarded suburbs of Winnetka, life was slowly returning to a sanctuary of peace.
Khloe had been discharged from the hospital on Thursday evening, accompanied by a private medical team and a security detail that had been doubled in size.
The nursery—a spacious, sunlit room overlooking the private gardens—was finally quiet.
Khloe sat in a comfortable rocking chair by the window, a warm mug of herbal tea in her hands, watching the afternoon sunlight filter through the oak trees outside.
The door opened silently, and Marcus walked in. He had changed into casual gray slacks and a dark blue cashmere sweater, looking more relaxed than he had in months. He walked over behind her, placing his hands gently on her shoulders, massaging the lingering tension from her muscles.
“How are you feeling?” he asked softly, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of her head.
“Better,” Khloe smiled, leaning back against him. “The doctors said the baby’s heart rate is completely normal. All the stress testing came back clear.”
“Good,” Marcus murmured, his hands sliding down to rest protectively over her stomach. “Because I’m never letting you out of my sight again. I’ve updated the security protocols for the entire estate. Biometric scanners at every entrance, private patrol units around the perimeter, and no visitors allowed without direct biometric clearance from both of us.”

Khloe chuckled softly. “Marcus, you’re turning our home into a fortress.”
“A fortress isn't enough,” Marcus replied, his voice dropping to a fierce, protective whisper. “It’s a sanctuary. And nobody will ever breach it again.”
