Chapter 4 - The Truth on the Screen

The security control room on the sub-level of St. Jude Memorial Hospital smelled of hot electronics, ozone, and stale coffee.
Four large, wall-mounted monitors displayed multi-split camera feeds from across the facility. In the center of the room sat the head of hospital security, a retired federal marshal named Vance Miller, flanked by two armed technicians whose faces looked grim.
The heavy steel door swung open, and Marcus Thorne walked in, followed closely by Uncle Richard. Behind them, escorted by hospital security, came Isabella Rossi—her composure completely shattered, her hair slightly disheveled, muttering frantic legal jargon under her breath about privacy rights and defamation.
“Lock the door,” Richard commanded one of the technicians.
Click. The heavy deadbolt slid home.
“Mr. Miller,” Richard said, walking straight to the central control console. “Bring up the feed for Suite 402, starting from ten minutes before the incident.”
“Right away, sir,” Miller replied, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard.
On the massive central screen, the high-definition footage flickered to life.
The timestamp in the corner read 9:42 PM. The camera angle, mounted high in the corner of the private hospital suite, provided a crystal-clear, bird's-eye view of the entire room.
Everyone in the control room watched in suffocating silence as Khloe Thorne walked into the suite, rubbing her temples with an expression of sheer exhaustion. She moved toward the sitting area, looking for a moment of peace after the suffocating noise of the gala downstairs.
Two minutes later, the door opened again.
Isabella Rossi stepped inside.
The audio feed kicked in through the high-end speakers, crisp and uncomfortably clear. Every whispered insult, every fake compliment, every dripping drop of venom echoed off the control room walls.
“You were never supposed to stand beside him...”
On screen, Isabella’s face twisted into that cold, calculated mask of hatred.
Marcus stared at the screen, his fists clenched so tight his fingernails dug deep into his palms. The sheer brutality of what he was watching—knowing that while he had been downstairs shaking hands with corrupt city officials and smiling for press photos, his pregnant wife had been cornered and hunted in what should have been a safe haven—sent a surge of homicidal fury through his veins.
On the monitor, Khloe’s voice trembled: “Leave. Get out of this room.”
Then came the escalation.
Isabella stepped forward. The audio captured the sharp slap of her hands against Khloe’s shoulders. The violent shove sent Khloe crashing backward into the marble edge of the table.
In the control room, Isabella let out a sharp, hysterical sound. “That’s... that’s edited! The audio is out of sync! Someone tampered with this—”
“Shut your mouth,” Marcus snarled, turning his head just enough to cast a glance over his shoulder that made Isabella physically stumble backward into a rack of spare monitors. It was a look so devoid of humanity that even the armed security guards shifted uneasily.
On the screen, the horror continued.
Khloe tried to steady herself, clutching her stomach in agony. And instead of showing remorse, Isabella moved in closer.
The camera caught the exact moment Isabella lifted her right foot.
Thud.
The stiletto heel struck Khloe’s side with calculated, vicious force, sending the pregnant woman collapsing hard onto the marble floor amid shattering glass.
Then came the audio switch—the exact moment the door opened, and Isabella’s expression miraculously morphed from a sneering predator into a weeping, terrified victim.
“She attacked me... I was only defending myself...”
The video paused on Isabella’s crying face.
The control room was so quiet you could hear the faint hum of the server racks cooling down.
Uncle Richard slowly turned around from the console. He adjusted his glasses, folding his hands neatly over the handle of his walking cane.
“Well, Ms. Rossi,” Richard said, his voice dripping with icy contempt. “It appears your acting career is about to take a rather dramatic turn toward a maximum-security penitentiary.”
Isabella’s knees buckled. She slid down the metal filing cabinet until she was sitting on the industrial carpet, her designer dress pooling around her like a pool of blood.
“No,” she whispered, shaking her head frantically. “No, Marcus, please! You know how I feel about you! I did it because I love you! She stole you from me! She didn't belong in your world!”
Marcus didn't yell. He didn't curse. He simply walked over to her, towering above her shrinking form, his shadow swallowing her whole.
“You thought you could destroy my family and play the victim,” Marcus said, his voice dropping to a low, lethal hum. “You thought my wife was alone. You didn't realize that the moment you laid a hand on her, you signed your own death warrant.”
Marcus turned to the head of security.
“Send a copy of this raw footage to the Chicago Police Department, the State’s Attorney, and every major news outlet in the tristate area. I want her name, her face, and her crimes broadcasted on every screen before sunrise.”

“Consider it done, Mr. Thorne,” Miller replied, already exporting the files to an encrypted thumb drive.
Isabella let out a shrill, piercing scream of pure terror as the two guards pulled her up by her arms, dragging her out of the control room toward a destiny she had so carefully engineered for someone else.
