Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Arrives

Within fifteen minutes, the private maternity ward on the top floor of St. Jude Memorial Hospital had been transformed into a fortress.

Doctors and nurses swarmed around Khloe’s VIP suite, running fetal heart monitors, setting up IV lines, and administering stabilizing medications to halt potential premature labor. The sharp beeps of medical equipment echoed against the pristine white walls, a constant, stressful reminder of the fragility of the moment.

Outside in the carpeted hallway, Marcus Thorne paced back and forth, his tuxedo jacket discarded over a chrome chair, his shirtsleeves rolled up to his forearms. His expression was a dark, brooding storm. Every muscle in his tall frame was coiled tight, ready to snap.

Leaning against the wall a few feet away was Isabella Rossi. She had managed to follow them down the hall, maintaining her posture of a distressed friend. She dabbed at her dry eyes with a designer tissue, speaking in low, sympathetic tones to a pair of hospital security guards who had arrived to take statements.

“I’m just so worried about her,” Isabella sniffled, casting a mournful glance toward Marcus’s back. “Pregnancy hormones can be so unpredictable. She hasn't been sleeping, and when she saw me talking to Marcus downstairs at the gala... I think jealousy just completely overtook her.”

The security guard nodded sympathetically, jotting notes down on a small pad. “And you say she slipped and fell into the furniture during the argument?”

“Yes, exactly,” Isabella lied smoothly, her voice steady and convincing. “She lunged at me, lost her footing against the marble table, and knocked over the champagne glass herself. I tried to cushion her fall, but she was too fast.”

Before the guard could reply, the elevator doors at the end of the private corridor chimed.

Out stepped a man whose mere presence commanded the immediate attention of everyone in the hallway.

Arthur Sterling—though known to the business world and federal regulators by his mother’s maiden name, Vance, and universally feared as Uncle Richard—strode down the hall with a terrifying, unhurried grace. He was in his late fifties, dressed in a custom charcoal three-piece suit, silver hair combed back with immaculate precision, and cold, calculating gray eyes behind rimless glasses.

As one of the primary stakeholders of the hospital network and a legendary corporate litigator who owned half the commercial real estate in Chicago, Uncle Richard did not visit hospitals casually.

When he received the encrypted alert on his private phone that his niece Khloe had been injured in an "accident" at a charity event sponsored by the Thorne group, he had mobilized his private jet and his legal strike team within minutes.

Marcus saw him first and stopped pacing.

Isabella turned to look at the newcomer, her socialite radar instantly recognizing the immense power radiating from the silver-haired man. She assumed he was just another wealthy associate of Marcus.

Uncle Richard ignored Marcus entirely at first. His cold gaze swept past the security guards, landed squarely on Isabella, and lingered there with the heavy, dissecting weight of an apex predator inspecting an insect.

“Who is this?” Uncle Richard’s voice was deep, smooth, and utterly freezing. It cut through the hum of the hospital corridor like a scalpel.

Marcus stepped forward, his jaw tight. “Richard. Thank God you’re here. Khloe is inside with the obstetricians. She’s stable, but the contractions—”

“Is she going to lose the baby?” Richard interrupted, his eyes never leaving Isabella.

“The doctors are managing it, but—”

“Good,” Richard said flatly. He turned his full, terrifying attention toward Isabella, who suddenly found herself shrinking under his gaze. “You’re the one they call Isabella Rossi, correct? The third-tier fashion influencer who has spent the last six months aggressively inserting herself into my niece’s social circle.”

Isabella’s fake tears dried up instantly. Her back stiffened with offended dignity. “Excuse me? I am a personal guest of—and I have every right to be concerned about my dear friend—”

“Friend?” Richard echoed, letting out a short, humorless laugh that sounded like dry ice cracking. He took two slow steps toward her, his leather shoes clicking sharply against the floor. “My niece doesn't have friends who wear crimson ballgowns to private hospital suites to shove pregnant women into marble tables.”

The hallway went dead silent. The security guards froze, their pens hovering over their pads.

Isabella’s face drained of color. “I... I don't know what you’re talking about. There was an accident! Khloe lost her balance! Ask the guards, I already told them—”

“You told the guards a fairy tale,” Richard said softly, stopping inches away from her. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to. “You are talking to the man who owns the security architecture of this entire hospital group, Ms. Rossi. Every square foot of private suite 402 is covered by dual-lens, high-definition optical sensors with synchronized multi-channel audio.”

Isabella’s breath caught in her throat. The tissue dropped from her trembling fingers.

“The cameras,” Richard continued, his gray eyes narrowing into razor-sharp slits, “record everything. From the moment you raised your voice to the exact second your stiletto heel connected with my niece’s ribs.”

May you like

Richard turned his head slightly, locking eyes with Marcus, who stood like a statue of vengeance beside him.

“Marcus,” Richard said coldly. “Get your coat. We’re going to the security control room.”
