Chapter 6 - The Sanctuary of Healing

Back in the VIP maternity suite of St. Jude Memorial Hospital, the morning sun was beginning to pierce through the sheer white curtains, casting a warm, golden glow across the room.

The beeps of the medical monitors had settled into a steady, reassuring rhythm. The contractions had stopped, and after an agonizing night of observation, the chief obstetrician had delivered the best possible news: Khloe and the baby were safe, out of immediate danger, and resting comfortably.

Khloe lay propped up against a mountain of plush pillows, wearing a soft cashmere robe. Her face was still pale, and dark circles remained beneath her eyes from the trauma and exhaustion of the night before, but the terrified tension that had gripped her body hours earlier was gone.

Sitting in a leather armchair beside the bed was Marcus.

He hadn't left her side all night. He hadn't shaved, his tuxedo jacket was long gone, and his tie hung loosely around his open collar. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were entirely fixed on his wife, holding her hand as if letting go for even a second would cause her to vanish.

“You should go home and sleep, Marcus,” Khloe said softly, her thumb gently tracing the back of his hand. “You look like you’ve been run over by a train.”

“I’m not going anywhere,” Marcus replied, his voice rough with fatigue but completely immovable. “If I couldn't protect you in our own hospital, I’m certainly not leaving you unguarded while I take a nap.”

Khloe smiled faintly, a tired, affectionate expression touching her lips. “Uncle Richard told me what happened in the control room.”

Marcus’s jaw tightened at the memory, a dark shadow passing over his face. “She’s finished, Khloe. Not just legally—financially, socially, professionally. Victor and Richard have already dismantled every asset she ever tied her name to. She will never be able to step foot in Chicago again without being served with a multi-million-dollar lawsuit.”

“I wasn't thinking about her,” Khloe murmured, her gaze dropping to her stomach, where her hand rested protectively over her baby bump. “I was thinking about how close we came to losing everything because I kept trying to take the high road.”

Marcus leaned forward, resting his forehead against her hand, his voice dropping to a raw, emotional whisper.

“That’s my fault,” Marcus confessed, the weight of his guilt heavy in every syllable. “I saw her hovering around us. I knew she was ambitious, I knew she ran in circles that envied our position, but I thought she was just another social climber looking for an invitation. I never thought... I never dreamed she was capable of something this evil.”

“You couldn't have known, Marcus,” Khloe said gently, running her fingers through his dark hair. “People like Isabella wear masks so well because they rely on our decency to hide behind. But she made one fatal mistake.”

“What’s that?”

“She thought I was alone,” Khloe said, her eyes shining with quiet strength. “She forgot who my family is. She forgot who you are.”

A soft knock interrupted them.

The door opened gently, and Uncle Richard stepped inside, holding a tray with two cups of black coffee and a fresh pastry. He looked as immaculate as ever, his three-piece suit unwrinkled despite the hour, though a subtle warmth softened the sharp edges of his gray eyes as he looked at his niece.

“Morning, children,” Richard greeted them smoothly, setting the tray down on the bedside table. “I trust the medical staff has been treating you with the appropriate level of terror I demanded last night?”

Khloe laughed softly. “They’ve been wonderful, Uncle Richard. The head nurse won't even let me sit up without three pillows.”

“Good,” Richard said, pulling up a chair. He looked at Marcus. “The police commissioner just called me. Isabella’s defense attorney tried to file for a psychiatric evaluation and a reduced bail bond.”

Marcus’s eyes narrowed dangerously. “And?”

“Judge Harrison threw the motion out before the defense even finished their opening sentence,” Richard replied with a thin, satisfied smile. “Between the high-definition security footage, the forensic audit of her financial accounts, and the digital paper trail of her harassment campaign, she’s facing a minimum of twelve to fifteen years behind bars with no possibility of early parole.”

Richard reached into his coat pocket and placed a sleek, secure tablet on the bed.

“Furthermore, her public relations firm just imploded. Every major media outlet in the country has picked up the story. The narrative isn't about a soap-opera love triangle anymore, Marcus. It’s a textbook case of corporate espionage, targeted harassment, and violent assault against an expectant mother.”

Marcus looked at the tablet screen, where a news headline flashed: SOCIALITE ISABELLA ROSSI ARRESTED AFTER VICIOUS ATTACK ON THORNE FAMILY HEIR.

“Good,” Marcus said coldly. “Let her name be a warning to anyone who thinks they can play games with my family.”
