Chapter 2 - The Mask Slips

The heavy silence in the private hospital suite felt suffocating.

For a terrifying moment, the only sound was the jagged, shallow rhythm of Khloe Thorne’s breathing as she lay curled on the cold marble floor. Her white silk maternity dress, pristine and elegant only minutes before, was now rumpled and stained with spilled champagne and dust from the baseboard. Her hands remained locked desperately around her swollen abdomen, shielding her unborn child from a world that had suddenly turned violent.

Marcus Thorne stood frozen near the open doorway.

The billionaire businessman—a man whose single word could shift stock markets across Wall Street and whose cold, calculating demeanor usually commanded every room he entered—looked utterly unmoored. His tailored black tuxedo felt suddenly too tight, his chest constricting as his gaze flicked from his agonizingly pale wife on the floor to the woman standing over her.

Isabella Rossi’s transformation was a masterclass in psychological manipulation.

One second, her face had been twisted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred—eyes narrowed, lips curled in a snarl of deep-seated jealousy. But the moment Marcus stepped through the door, the mask vanished.

Her posture melted from predatory tension into fragile vulnerability. Her lower lip quivered. Big, heavy tears welled up in her dark eyes, spilling over her lashes with theatrical timing. Her hands, which had just delivered a vicious blow to a seven-month pregnant woman, began to shake violently.

“Marcus...” Isabella breathed, her voice cracking with a fragile, heartbreaking tremor.

She took a small, hesitant step backward, away from Khloe, as if she were the one who had been terrorized.

“Thank God you’re here,” Isabella whispered, her voice carrying the delicate pitch of a frightened victim. “She... she attacked me.”

Elaine Parker, the event coordinator standing right behind Marcus, gasped aloud, her hand flying to her mouth.

Marcus didn't move. His dark eyes, usually sharp and analytical, narrowed as he stared at Isabella. He didn't speak. He didn't rush forward to comfort the weeping socialite. Instead, his gaze cut back down to the floor, where Khloe let out a low, strangled gasp of pain.

“Khloe!”

The icy paralysis broke. Marcus surged forward past Isabella, dropping to his knees beside his wife with a speed and desperation that shocked everyone in the room.

“Khloe, look at me. Stay with me,” Marcus pleaded, his hands hovering over her trembling form, terrified of touching her incorrectly and causing more pain. His voice, usually so steady and commanding, cracked with raw terror. “Can you hear me? Where does it hurt?”

“My... my stomach, Marcus,” Khloe whispered, tears streaming down her pale cheeks as another contraction of pain ripped through her body. “The baby... make sure the baby is okay...”

“The baby is going to be fine. You’re going to be fine,” Marcus vowed, his jaw clenching so hard muscles ticked in his cheeks. He looked up at Elaine, who was standing frozen in shock near the door. “Get the head of obstetrics in here now! Call code pink! Move!”

Elaine snapped out of her daze, spinning on her heel and bolting down the corridor, screaming for medical staff.

As Marcus gently slid his arms beneath Khloe to lift her off the cold marble, Isabella hovered near the edge of the scene, wiping a fake tear from her cheek.

“Marcus, I tried to calm her down, I swear,” Isabella sobbed softly, pitching her voice just loud enough for him to hear over Khloe’s pained breaths. “She was talking about how you never really loved me, how she was going to ruin me... she just snapped and threw herself against the table. I only tried to catch her—”

Marcus stopped.

He didn't turn around, but his entire body went rigid. The air in the room grew several degrees colder.

“Shut up, Isabella,” Marcus said without looking back. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried the lethal weight of an executioner’s axe.

Isabella’s breath hitched. For a split second, genuine panic flickered behind her tear-filled eyes. But she quickly recovered, pulling her crimson gown tighter around her shoulders as medical personnel rushed through the door with a rolling gurney, cutting off any further performance.

As the nurses hoisted Khloe onto the gurney, Khloe’s hand reached out, her fingers catching Marcus’s sleeve.

“Marcus... the cameras...” she managed to whisper, her eyes locking onto his with urgent clarity before the pain pulled her under. “Check... check the security feed...”

Marcus squeezed her hand fiercely. “I know, my love. I’m handling it. Nobody touches you and gets away with it. Nobody.”
