Chapter 9 - The Execution of Assets

Over the next four weeks, the total destruction of the Robles family proceeded with surgical precision.

With Carmen and Javier sitting in federal detention awaiting trial, Alexander unleashed his firm's civil litigation division.

A civil suit was filed on Sofia’s behalf for battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and fraud. Because Carmen’s legal team was crippled and her assets frozen by federal prosecutors, Alexander secured a default summary judgment of $5.2 million in damages.

To satisfy the judgment, the state sheriff’s office ordered the immediate seizure and public auction of all assets held by Carmen Robles and her shell companies.

On a warm Friday afternoon, I stood with Alexander on the manicured lawn of Carmen’s Preston Hollow estate. A large yellow banner hung across the wrought-iron front gates: PUBLIC FORECLOSURE & ASSET AUCTION.

Dozens of buyers, antique dealers, and news crews milled about the driveway.

Moving men carried out Carmen’s prized possessions: her Italian leather sofas, her crystal chandeliers, her collection of oil paintings, and her glass display cases containing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fine gold jewelry.

"It's strange," I whispered, watching a moving crew load a $20,000 mahogany dining table onto a flatbed truck. "She tried to steal Sofia’s condo to save her house, and now she’s losing both."

"Greed is a short-sighted disease, Elena," Alexander said, standing beside me with his hands in his coat pockets. "It makes people believe they can take whatever they want without paying the cost."

Marcus walked over, holding a clipboard.

"The auction just wrapped up, Boss," Marcus reported with a grin. "The estate brought in $3.1 million. Her luxury cars and jewelry brought in another $1.2 million. Every cent of the proceeds, after court fees, is being transferred directly into Sofia’s newly established private trust."

"And the creditors in Miami?" Alexander asked.

"They're taking whatever is left over," Marcus chuckled. "Which is roughly zero. Carmen and Javier will emerge from prison ten years from now without a single penny, a single property, or a single credit line to their names."

I looked at Alexander, feeling a profound sense of closure settle over me.

"Where is Sofia?" Alexander asked softly, looking around the crowded driveway.

"She's at the Uptown condo," I smiled. "She’s redecorating."
