Chapter 5 - The Snake's Nest

By noon, news of the arrests at the Grand Regency had shattered the Dallas social scene.

Local news networks picked up the story within hours. The combination of high-society drama, extreme violence, and the involvement of legendary attorney Alexander Parker made it the lead story on every local network and national tabloid.

“DALLAS SOCIALITE ARRESTED AT POST-WEDDING BRUNCH FOR BEATING BRIDE OVER $1.8M CONDO.”

I sat in Alexander’s private corner office on the 40th floor of the Parker & Vance building. Through the glass walls, the skyline of Dallas stretched out under a clear sky. Sofia was downstairs in the firm’s private rest quarters, accompanied by a trauma counselor and guarded by two off-duty officers.

Alexander handed me a porcelain mug of hot tea.

"How is she holding up?" he asked softly, sitting on the edge of his desk.

"She’s quiet," I said, staring into the dark amber liquid. "She feels foolish, Alexander. She thinks she should have seen the signs."

"Manipulators like Carmen Robles spend years refining their craft, Elena," Alexander said, his eyes darkening. "They target kind, trusting people. Sofia didn't fail. We just didn't catch it in time."

He paused, looking at me with a rare expression of remorse.

"I didn't catch it in time," he corrected himself softly. "I left you two alone for ten years because I was too obsessed with building this firm. I let those vultures walk right into her life."

I looked at him, feeling the sharp edges of my long-held resentment soften just a fraction. "You came when I called, Alexander. That’s what matters today."

The heavy door to the office opened, and Marcus walked in holding a tablet.

"Boss, we have a problem," Marcus said, his tone grim.

Alexander’s eyes narrowed instantly. "What is it?"

"Carmen’s bail hearing was set for 2:00 PM," Marcus explained. "Her high-powered criminal attorney, Victor Thorne, just filed an emergency motion. He’s claiming that the audio recording from the hotel was obtained without a proper warrant and is legally inadmissible."

"Thorne is right," Alexander muttered, his brow furrowing. "The hotel hallway audio was secured via a private security contractor before a formal police subpoena was logged. In a bail hearing, Thorne can argue it was an illegal search."

"It gets worse," Marcus added. "Thorne produced a handwritten document allegedly signed by Sofia three weeks ago—a preliminary agreement granting Javier management rights over her Uptown condo. Thorne is telling the press that Sofia attacked Carmen in a fit of hysterical rage over a prenup dispute, and that Carmen was merely defending herself."

I jumped up from my chair, my tea spilling over the glass table. "Defending herself?! She had six women hold my daughter down!"

"Calm down, Elena," Alexander said smoothly, though his eyes flashed with dangerous fire. "Thorne is pulling a classic defense tactic: smear the victim, destroy the evidence’s credibility, and get them released on bond before the narrative sets."

"If Carmen gets out on bond today," Marcus warned, "her Miami creditors will move her out of the state by midnight."

Alexander stood up, straightening his tie with deliberate calm.

"Then we aren't going to rely on the hotel audio," Alexander said softly. "Marcus, where is Javier being held?"

"Lew Sterrett Justice Center. Holding Cell 4B."

"Get me twenty minutes alone in the attorney consultation room with Javier Robles," Alexander ordered. "Before his lawyer arrives."
