Chapter 4 - The Court of Public Opinion

The ballroom exploded into chaos.
Women shrieked, covering their mouths. Men stood up from their chairs in utter disbelief. Several of Carmen's prominent high-society friends stumbled back from the table, staring at the screens in complete revulsion.
"Turn that off!" Carmen shrieked, her voice cracking as her regal composure shattered into pieces. "Turn it off right now! What is the meaning of this filth?!"
"Those are the injuries inflicted upon my daughter twelve hours ago," Alexander’s voice cut through her screams like a foghorn. "In the bridal suite of the Ritz-Carlton. Inflicted by you, Carmen, your sisters, and enabled by your coward of a son."
Javier turned deathly pale, jumping up from his seat. "That’s a lie! She fell! She was drunk and fell down the concrete steps behind the hotel!"
I stepped forward, holding up my phone connected to the room’s speakers.
"Is that right, Javier?" I said, my voice steady and cold. "Then explain this."
I hit play on an audio file.
The room went dead silent as a recording played across the speakers. It was the clear, unedited audio from the Ritz-Carlton corridor security feed that Alexander’s team had legally subpoenaed three hours prior.
[Audio Feed — 1:14 AM] Javier’s voice: "Mom, don't hit her too much in the face. People will notice tomorrow." Carmen’s voice: "Shut up, Javier! Stand by the door and make sure no hotel staff comes down this hallway! She signs the Uptown condo over today, or she doesn't leave this room alive!"
The recording ended.
The silence that followed was suffocating.
Two of Carmen’s closest socialite friends turned around, grabbed their purses, and walked out of the ballroom without looking back.
"You... you recorded us?!" Carmen stammered, her hands trembling violently as she backed away toward the head table. "This is illegal! This is defamation!"
"It’s not defamation when it’s evidence in a court of law, Mrs. Robles," Detective Miller stepped forward from behind Alexander, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt. "Carmen Robles, Javier Robles, you are both under arrest for aggravated assault, felony extortion, and conspiracy to commit kidnapping."
"Wait! No! You can't touch me!" Javier screamed, backing up against the wall. "Do you know who my lawyers are?!"
"I know who your lawyers were," Alexander said quietly, stepping closer to Javier until he was inches from his face. "They were retainers hired by your shell corporation. As of 8:00 AM this morning, three of your primary creditors have filed emergency asset freezes against your accounts. You are bankrupt, Javier. You have no money, no firm, and starting today, no freedom."
Detective Miller stepped in, grabbing Javier’s wrist and snapping the steel cuff around it with a harsh click.
Javier began to cry hysterically, struggling against the detective’s grip. "Mom! Do something! Call Uncle Hector! Call anyone!"
Carmen tried to run toward the service exit, but the second detective cut her off, blocking the doorway and grabbing her arms.

"Get your hands off me, you piece of garbage!" Carmen spat, her manicured nails digging into the officer's coat. "I am Carmen Robles! My family built this city!"
"Your family is finished, Mrs. Robles," Alexander said, watching her as the cuffs were locked behind her back. "And by the time I am done with you in civil court, you won't even own the clothes on your back."
