Chapter 6 - The Weakest Link

The interrogation room at the Lew Sterrett Justice Center smelled of industrial bleach and old sweat.

Javier sat at the metal table, his hands cuffed to an iron ring anchored in the center of the wood. His linen suit was crumpled, his tie removed, and his slick hair hung in greasy strands over his forehead.

The heavy steel door clicked open, and Alexander walked in alone.

Javier snapped his head up, panic flaring in his eyes. "You... you can't be in here! My lawyer said I shouldn't talk to anyone!"

Alexander didn't answer. He dragged a metal folding chair across the concrete floor, the screech echoing loudly, and sat down directly across from the young man.

He pulled a thin leather folder from under his arm and laid it flat on the table.

"Your lawyer, Victor Thorne, is currently working on getting your mother out on bond," Alexander said in a conversationally calm voice. "Did he tell you that?"

Javier blinked. "He... he's working on getting both of us out!"

Alexander gave a small, pitying shake of his head. "Javier. Look at me."

Javier looked up reluctantly.

"Your mother’s attorney filed a motion thirty minutes ago," Alexander lied smoothly, his gray eyes unblinking. "In that motion, Mrs. Robles claims that she had no prior knowledge of any physical confrontation. She claims that you orchestrated the entire event, that you dragged her into the hotel suite, and that you instructed her sisters to restrain Sofia."

Javier’s mouth fell open. "What?! No! That’s a lie! It was her idea! She was the one who said we needed the condo to pay off the Miami debt!"

"Of course she was," Alexander murmured softly. "And right now, Victor Thorne—who is being paid from your mother’s remaining personal trust, not yours—is throwing you directly to the wolves. When that judge sits down at 2:00 PM, Carmen will walk out on a $50,000 bond. And you will be charged with first-degree felony extortion and criminal conspiracy, facing twelve to fifteen years in state prison."

Javier began to pant frantically, his hands pulling uselessly against the iron ring on the table. "No... no, no, no! She promised me! She said she would take care of it!"

"Your mother cares about one thing, Javier," Alexander said, leaning forward until his shadow covered the young man completely. "Survival. She sacrificed Sofia last night. Do you really think she won't sacrifice you today?"

Tears of pure terror spilled over Javier’s pale cheeks. "She has a blue notebook," he blurted out, his voice cracking hysterically. "In her safe at the house! In the master closet behind the vanity!"

Alexander didn't move a muscle. "What's in the notebook, Javier?"

"Everything!" Javier sobbed. "The names of the hard-money lenders, the offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, the forged signatures she used on the property evaluation forms... she recorded every transaction! She kept it as insurance against her business partners!"

Alexander stared at him for five quiet seconds. Then, he reached into his inner suit pocket, pulled out a digital audio recorder that had been recording the entire conversation, and tapped the stop button.

Click.

"Thank you, Javier," Alexander said, standing up and sliding the recorder back into his pocket. "You just saved yourself five years off your sentence."

Javier froze, realizing what he had just done. "Wait... you tricked me?! My mother didn't throw me under the bus?!"

May you like

Alexander paused at the steel door, looking back over his shoulder with a cold, terrifying smile.

"Not yet," Alexander said. "But she will now."
