Chapter 8 - The Breakdown

At 2:30 PM, inside Courtroom 402 of the Frank Crowley Courts Building, the legal hammer fell with crushing force.

Carmen Robles stood at the defense table in a bright orange jumpsuit, flanked by her expensive defense attorney, Victor Thorne. Her polished hair was disheveled, her makeup gone, and her hands were bound by heavy waist chains.

Across the aisle sat District Attorney Vance, flanked by Alexander.

In the gallery sat me, holding Sofia’s hand tightly. Sofia wore a high-collared black sweater that covered her neck, her dark glasses hiding the faint yellowing bruises around her eyes.

"Your Honor," Victor Thorne argued passionately to the judge. "My client is a pillar of the Dallas community! She has no prior criminal record! This entire situation stems from a tragic domestic dispute between newlyweds, exaggerated by Mr. Parker’s immense media influence!"

Judge Eleanor Vance—a formidable woman known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic abuse—stared down over her reading glasses at Thorne.

"A domestic dispute, Mr. Thorne?" Judge Vance asked coldly.

She picked up the file delivered by the DA fifteen minutes earlier.

"I have before me a certified forensic medical report showing forty distinct blunt-force trauma marks on a twenty-four-year-old woman," Judge Vance said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom. "I have sworn statements from state forensic investigators, and I have a blue ledger recovered from your client's safe detailing a premeditated plot to physically coerce the victim into signing over $1.8 million in real estate."

Carmen’s attorney paled. "Your Honor, that evidence was—"

"That evidence was recovered under a legally executed search warrant based on co-conspirator testimony," Judge Vance interrupted sharply.

She turned her sharp gaze directly to Carmen Robles.

"Mrs. Robles, you are a danger to society and a severe flight risk," Judge Vance declared, slamming her wooden gavel onto the bench with a sound that cracked through the room. "Bail is DENIED. You will remain in county custody pending grand jury indictment on state and federal charges."

"No!" Carmen shrieked, her voice echoing off the wood-paneled walls. "You can't do this to me! Javier! Javier, tell them!"

She turned toward the holding cell door, where Javier was being brought in by two bailiffs, also wearing orange jumpsuits and chains.

Javier refused to look at her. He kept his head bowed, tears dripping onto his orange collar.

"Javier! Look at me!" Carmen screamed, thrashing against the bailiffs holding her arms. "Tell the judge I didn't do anything! Tell them it was all you!"

Javier raised his head slightly, his eyes hollow and filled with bitter hatred.

"Shut up, Mom," Javier spat bitterly, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet courtroom. "Just shut up. I told them about the blue notebook. I told them everything."

Carmen froze.

The color drained completely from her face as the realization washed over her. Her own son—the boy she had raised to be her ultimate pawn—had broken her empire to save himself.

"You... you traitor!" Carmen howled, lunging toward her son despite her heavy waist chains. "You ungrateful little dog! I did all of this for you! I built everything for you!"

The bailiffs quickly wrestled Carmen to the floor, holding her down as she kicked and screamed like a wild animal. The high-society socialite who had walked into my home three months ago wearing expensive gold and smelling of designer perfume was now writhing on the cold linoleum floor of a public courtroom, publicly exposed as a fraud and a monster.

Sofia watched the scene quietly from her seat beside me. She didn't laugh. She didn't cheer.

She simply reached out, took my hand, and let out a long, slow breath—the first real breath she had taken in twenty-four hours.
