Chapter 9 - The Country Club Humiliation

Two weeks after the trial, the Oakridge Country Club—the most exclusive private social club in the county—was hosting its annual Spring Charity Gala.
Gloria Vance stood near the grand marble fountain outside the club's entrance.
She had managed to scrape together enough cash from her temporary job as a receptionist at a local dry cleaner to rent a silver evening gown. She was desperate to speak with her former high-society friends, hoping to convince them to start a "defense fund" for her son's legal appeal.
"Veronica! Susan!" Gloria called out, rushing toward a group of wealthy socialites sipping champagne near the terrace. "Oh, thank goodness I found you!"
The three women turned. As soon as they saw Gloria, their expressions hardened into cold, dismissive contempt.
"Gloria," Veronica said dryly, stepping back. "What are you doing here? This event is for active members only."
"I... I came to explain!" Gloria stammered, clutching her fake leather clutch to her chest. "The news reports... they got it all wrong! Margaret Hartwell set us up! She manipulated the court system! My poor Evan is an innocent victim!"
"An innocent victim?" Susan laughed bitterly, pulling out her smartphone. "Gloria, the court video was leaked to the local news three days ago. Over two million people have watched your son physically assault his wife while you sat at the dining table eating roast beef!"
Gloria’s face burned bright, furious red. "It was taken out of context!"
Before Gloria could say another word, the grand double doors of the ballroom opened.
A sleek black limousine pulled up to the red carpet. The valet opened the door, and out stepped Margaret Hartwell, wearing a breathtaking emerald dress and diamonds that sparkled under the terrace chandeliers.
Beside her stepped Emily, wearing a stunning white silk gown, looking breathtakingly confident and regal.
The entire terrace erupted into applause as the club board members rushed forward to welcome Margaret and Emily as the evening's honored guests of distinction.
Gloria pushed her way through the crowd, screaming hysterically. "You! You ruined my family! You destroyed my life!"
Security guards instantly intercepted Gloria, grabbing her by both arms before she could reach the red carpet.
The General Manager of the country club stepped forward, holding a formal letter.
"Gloria Vance," the manager said loudly enough for the entire crowd to hear. "Your guest privileges have been permanently revoked, and you are officially banned from the Oakridge property for life. If you step foot on these grounds again, you will be arrested for trespass."
"You can't do this to me!" Gloria shrieked as the guards dragged her backward down the marble steps toward the parking lot. "I belong here!"

Emily stopped on the red carpet. She turned slowly, looked down at Gloria kicking and screaming near the curb, and felt nothing but quiet, dignified pity.
She turned back to her mother, took Margaret's arm, and walked proudly into the ballroom to take her rightful place at the head of the room.
