Chapter 8 - The Legal Firestorm

Six months later.
The County Superior Courthouse sat bathed in the harsh morning sunlight.
Inside Courtroom 402, the gallery was packed with corporate reporters, local news crews, and legal observers.
Evan Vance sat at the defense table wearing a cheap, off-the-rack gray suit provided by his public defender. His handsome looks had vanished—he was thin, pale, and dark circles hollowed his eyes after spending six months in county jail unable to post his $500,000 bail.
Beside him sat his lawyer, frantically organizing stacks of paper. In the gallery behind him sat Gloria, wearing a plain dress from a discount department store, her eyes fixed on the floor.
At the plaintiff’s table sat Emily.
She wore a tailored navy-blue suit, her hair styled in a sleek, professional chignon. She held her head high, her posture immaculate, looking every bit the heiress and executive she was born to be.
"All rise for the Honorable Judge Patricia Vance," the bailiff announced.
Judge Vance—a formidable, no-nonsense magistrate known for her zero-tolerance stance on domestic violence—took her seat at the elevated bench.
"We are here today for final disposition in the consolidated matters of State v. Evan Vance for felony domestic battery, and Hartwell Trust v. Evan and Gloria Vance for civil fraud and asset recovery," Judge Vance stated.
Evan’s defense attorney stood up. "Your Honor, my client wishes to submit a plea of no contest. We argue that Mr. Vance was under extreme marital stress and that his actions, while regrettable, were blown out of proportion by his mother-in-law’s immense wealth and influence."
"Is that your defense, counselor?" Judge Vance asked, her voice dry as tinder. "Stress?"
Daniel Cho stood up at our table.
"Your Honor," Daniel said, tapping his laptop. "We request permission to enter into evidence Exhibit C: the unedited 4K cloud video footage from the residence, along with the forensic accounting report detailing $340,000 in embezzled corporate funds transferred directly into offshore personal accounts."
The large monitors in the courtroom flickered to life.
The video played clearly for the entire courtroom to see: Evan shoving Emily into the counter, screaming obscenities while she held baby Lily, and towering over her as she wept.
Gasps echoed through the gallery.
Judge Vance’s face turned into a mask of pure, righteous fury. She turned her eyes toward Evan, who shrank back into his chair.
"Mr. Vance," Judge Vance said, her voice echoing off the high wood-paneled walls. "You did not just abuse your wife. You systematically exploited a family's generosity, abused a defenseless mother, and stole hundreds of thousands of dollars to fund a lifestyle you never earned."
She picked up her gavel.
"Regarding the criminal charges: I sentence you to seven years in the State Correctional Facility without the possibility of early parole," Judge Vance ruled firmly. "Regarding the civil trust action: all assets, accounts, and personal property acquired during the marriage are hereby awarded solely to Emily Hartwell. Furthermore, a permanent, lifetime order of protection is granted for Emily Hartwell and Lily Hartwell."
BANG!
The gavel struck the block like a clap of thunder.
Evan burst into tears at the defense table as bailiffs stepped forward, forcing his hands behind his back and snapping heavy steel cuffs onto his wrists once more.

"Emily! Please!" Evan cried out as he was dragged toward the side exit doors. "I’m sorry! I love you! Please talk to your mother!"
Emily didn't look at him. She didn't blink. She simply stacked her legal documents neatly in her leather briefcase, stood up, and turned her back on him forever.
