Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Bruise

"She’s lying!" Evan yelled, pointing a shaking finger at Emily. "Whatever she told you, Margaret, she’s lying! She’s unstable! She’s been suffering from postpartum depression for months! Ask anyone! I’ve been taking care of her!"

"Is that right?" I asked softly.

I turned to my daughter. "Bluebird. Show them."

Emily’s hands shook violently. She reached down to the cuff of her gray knit sweater and slowly, painfully pulled it up past her elbow.

A dark, yellow-and-purple bruise shaped like a human hand gripped tightly around her pale forearm was fully exposed under the chandelier lights. Near her wrist were small, raw scrapes where fingernails had dug into her skin.

The off-duty deputies immediately shifted their posture, their hands moving to their duty belts.

"Jesus," one of the deputies muttered, taking out a small notepad and a camera. "Ma'am, step over here, please."

"She tripped!" Evan shouted, taking a step backward, his eyes darting toward the front door. "She tripped over the stroller yesterday in the hallway! I tried to catch her! That’s a grab mark from saving her fall!"

"Is that your official statement, Mr. Vance?" Daniel Cho asked calmly.

"Yes! That's exactly what happened! Ask my mother! Gloria saw it!"

Gloria nodded frantically. "Yes! Yes, I saw it! Emily is so clumsy lately! She drops dishes, she trips over her own feet—Evan was just being a protective husband!"

I reached into my handbag and pulled out a small black USB drive, handing it directly to the lead deputy.

"What is that?" Evan asked, his breath catching in his throat.

"When I placed this home into the trust three years ago," I explained, looking directly into Evan’s terrified eyes, "I integrated a high-definition, cloud-backed home automation and security system. Every room in this house—except the bedrooms and bathrooms—is equipped with motion-activated 4K cameras hidden within the smoke detectors."

Evan’s face drained of every last drop of color.

"The cloud feed from two hours ago has already been downloaded by Mr. Cho’s team," I continued, my voice steady and cold. "It clearly shows you grabbing my daughter by the arm, slamming her against the kitchen counter, and threatening to 'break her fingers' if she didn't finish washing the dishes before your mother arrived for dinner."

"No..." Evan whispered, taking another step back until his hips hit the dining table. "No, no, no..."

"Furthermore," Daniel added, "the audio recording captured you stating, and I quote: 'Your mother’s money doesn't protect you here, Emily. You do what I say or I'll make sure you never see Lily again.'"

The lead deputy stepped forward, pulling heavy steel handcuffs from his belt.

"Evan Vance," the deputy said sternly. "You are under arrest for felony domestic battery, assault, and terroristic threats. Put your hands behind your back."

"Mom!" Evan shrieked as the metal cuffs clicked tightly around his wrists. "Mom, do something! Call our lawyer!"

"I... I..." Gloria stammered, backing away toward the wall, her hands shaking so violently she dropped her wine glass, shattering it against the floorboards.
