Chapter 6 - The Guest Suite Eviction

Gloria scrambled off the floor like an animal, her expensive designer heels clicking frantically against the hardwood as she sprinted toward the guest wing on the first floor.

I followed her calmly, flanked by two private security guards carrying heavy black trash bags.

The guest suite was larger than most apartment master bedrooms. It featured a king-sized canopy bed, plush velvet sofas, a private marble bathroom, and a walk-in closet packed with designer clothes, leather boots, and fur coats.

Gloria threw open her closet doors, frantically grabbing armfuls of clothes and throwing them onto the bed.

"Not those, Mrs. Vance," Daniel Cho said, stepping into the doorway.

Gloria froze, a $3,000 cashmere coat clutched in her arms. "What do you mean 'not those'?! These are my clothes!"

"Every item purchased using the corporate credit card between June 12th of last year and today is considered derivative proceeds of grand larceny," Daniel explained, pulling out a detailed itemized inventory sheet. "They are subject to immediate judicial seizure for asset recovery."

"You can't leave me naked!" Gloria screamed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched shriek.

"You may take items that were in your physical possession prior to your arrival eleven months ago," Daniel said calmly.

One of the security guards stepped forward, opened a black trash bag, and set it on the floor.

"You have six minutes," the guard said, checking his watch.

Gloria looked around her opulent suite, her chest heaving, tears ruining her expensive mascara and leaving black streaks down her cheeks.

With trembling hands, she reached into the back of the closet, pulling out two faded, inexpensive blouses and a pair of worn trousers she had worn when she first arrived eleven months ago. She threw them into the black trash bag.

"My jewelry!" she gasped, running toward the marble vanity.

"Purchased at Tiffany & Co. using company funds on October 14th," Daniel noted, marking his ledger. "Leave the box on the vanity."

Gloria sobbed hysterically, her hands shaking so hard she could barely tie the top of the trash bag.

She dragged the bulging black trash bag out into the hallway, past the dining table where the roast beef was now stone cold, and out through the grand front entrance.

Outside, the rain had begun to fall—a light, cold spring drizzle.

Streetlights illuminated the suburban neighborhood. Next-door neighbors, drawn out by the flashing police lights and sirens, stood on their front porches watching the drama unfold.

Gloria stood on the wet asphalt driveway, wearing a plain trench coat, holding her single black trash bag.

Her son was sitting in the back of a police cruiser in handcuffs. Her luxury sports car was locked remotely. Her bank accounts were frozen.

She turned back to look at the house one last time.

I stood on the covered front porch, holding baby Lily in my arms, with Emily standing strong beside me.

I pulled the heavy mahogany front door shut, locking it with a firm, resounding click.
