Chapter 3 - The Eviction Order

The front doorbell chimed—a heavy, authoritative ring that vibrated through the floorboards.
Evan stood frozen beside the dining table, his phone slipping from his fingers onto the carpet. Gloria’s face had turned the color of curdled milk.
"Who... who are those people?" Gloria whispered, her hand clutching her pearl necklace. "Evan, go tell them to leave! This is private property!"
Before Evan could move, the front door unlocked with a sharp electronic click. Daniel Cho walked into the foyer, flanked by the two uniformed deputies and private security personnel.
"Evan Vance?" Daniel asked, his tone crisp, professional, and entirely devoid of emotion.
"Who the hell are you to walk into my house?!" Evan roared, trying to regain his dominant posture, though his cracked voice betrayed his panic. "Get out before I call the police!"
"You don't need to call us, sir," one of the deputies said, stepping forward. "We are already here."
Daniel opened his briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of blue-bound legal documents.
"I am Daniel Cho, chief legal counsel for the Hartwell Family Trust," Daniel announced, his voice carrying clearly into the dining room. "I am serving you with an immediate Revocation of Occupancy License, an Emergency Restraining Order, and a Corporate Suspension Notice."
"Occupancy license?!" Gloria shrieked, standing up so fast her chair fell backward onto the rug. "This is my son's house! He bought this house!"
Daniel didn't even look at her. He flipped to the third page of the document.
"This property located at 412 Elmwood Lane is 100% owned by the Hartwell Family Trust," Daniel stated smoothly. "Evan Vance was granted a temporary, revocable residential license contingent upon his marital harmony and continued employment at Hartwell Dining Group. As of 6:15 PM today, his employment has been terminated for cause, and his residential license has been revoked."
"You can't terminate me!" Evan screamed, his face flushing a mottled, furious purple. "I'm the regional director!"
"Correction," Daniel said. "You were the regional director. As of five minutes ago, your executive powers were stripped by unanimous decision of the Board of Trustees—headed by Margaret Hartwell."
Daniel held out a pen and the documents. "You have fifteen minutes to vacate the premises, Mr. Vance."
"Fifteen minutes?!" Gloria screeched. "Are you insane?! My silk dresses are upstairs! My imported jewelry! My guest suite!"
"Mrs. Gloria Vance," Daniel turned his cool gaze toward her. "You were invited as a guest for a maximum duration of six weeks starting eleven months ago. You are currently an illegal squatter on trust property. You have fifteen minutes as well."
Evan turned to Emily, who was standing beside me, clutching my arm.
"Emily!" Evan barked, his voice dropping into the terrifying, manipulative edge he had used on her for months. "Tell them to stop! Tell your mother to stop this crazy nonsense right now! Tell them you want me here!"
Emily flinched, shrinking back behind my shoulder.

I stepped directly into Evan’s line of sight, blocking him from my daughter.
"She isn't going to say anything to you, Evan," I said, my voice echoing with absolute steel. "Because her voice belongs to her again. And yours is about to be silenced."
