Chapter 9 - The Sound of Love

Three weeks later.
The ocean breeze blew gently across the terrace of the Thorne Estate. The sun was setting over the horizon, painting the sky in deep shades of gold and purple.
Vanessa stood by the balcony railing, watching the lawn below. Layla and Lily were running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Vance had bought for them. Layla’s clear, ringing laughter carried across the yard.
Laughter. It was a sound Vanessa had spent eight long years dreaming of.
A warm coat was gently placed over Vanessa’s shoulders. She turned to find Vance standing beside her, holding two glasses of wine.
"She’s talking in full sentences now," Vanessa said softly, tears of joy reflecting in her eyes. "Her speech therapist said she’s learning faster than any child they’ve ever seen."
"She’s smart, just like her mother," Vance replied, handing her a glass.
Vanessa looked at Vance. Over the last month, the terrifying shadow king had completely dismantled Chester Aldrich’s empire, locked up every member of the corrupt medical syndicate, and secured Whitmore BioTech’s future. But here, with her, he was just Vance—a devoted father who had saved her life and given her daughter a voice.
"The fake engagement served its purpose," Vanessa said quietly, her heart beating a little faster. "The stock price has stabilized. Chester is in prison. You don't have to pretend anymore, Vance."
Vance stepped closer, setting his glass down on the table. He took Vanessa’s hands in his, his rough, scarred fingers gentle against her skin.
"Who said I was pretending, Vanessa?" Vance asked, his hazel eyes intense and raw with genuine emotion.
Vanessa held her breath. "Vance..."
"I fell in love with your strength the moment you stood up to Chester at that gala," Vance admitted, his voice low and husky. "And watching you love your daughter made me realize how empty this giant house was without you two in it. I don't want a strategic alliance, Vanessa. I want a family. With you. If you’ll have a broken ex-soldier like me."
Vanessa smiled through her tears. She reached up, cupping his jawline, feeling the light stubble beneath her fingers.
"You aren't broken, Vance Thorne," she whispered. "You're our protector."
Vance leaned down, closing the distance between them, and kissed her—a deep, passionate kiss filled with years of unspoken longing, promise, and protection.

Below the balcony, Layla paused, looked up at her mother and Vance, and giggled loudly.
"Look, Lily!" Layla called out happily, her voice bright and full of life. "Mommy and Uncle Vance are kissing!"
