Chapter 4 - The First Sound of Truth

An hour later, a heavily armored convoy of matte-black SUVs tore through the pouring rain, arriving at the Thorne Estate—a massive, fortified cliffside fortress overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.
Vanessa held Layla tightly as they were ushered into a state-of-the-art medical wing located beneath the estate. Standing in the waiting area was an eight-year-old girl with golden curls and bright blue eyes, holding a plush teddy bear.
"Dad!" the little girl cried out, running to Vance. Vance picked her up effortlessly, kissing her forehead.
"Lily, this is Mrs. Vanessa and Layla," Vance said gently.
Lily smiled warmly at Layla and waved, immediately using hand signs to say: 【Welcome to my house! Do you want to play after?】
Layla’s face lit up, a small, tentative smile appearing on her face for the first time all evening. Vanessa felt tears sting her eyes. Her daughter had spent years feeling like an outcast, but here, in the home of a feared syndicate king, she was immediately embraced.
Dr. Marcus, Vance’s head chief of surgery, stepped out of the prep room. "Commander, the micro-extraction suite is ready. The procedure will take less than twenty minutes using micro-magnetic resonance. No incisions needed."
Vanessa grabbed Vance’s arm tightly. "Please... make sure she’s okay."
"On my life," Vance promised solemnly.
The twenty minutes felt like twenty centuries. Vanessa paced the surgical corridor, her mind racing with thoughts of betrayal. Her late husband had trusted Chester Aldrich. Chester had been like an uncle to her after her husband’s tragic death three years ago. To realize that Chester had intentionally muted her daughter to render Vanessa emotionally vulnerable and distracted while he siphoned billions from Whitmore BioTech was a level of evil she couldn't fathom.
Suddenly, the red light above the operating room turned green.
Dr. Marcus stepped out, holding a tiny, sterile glass vial. Inside was a microscopic silver device, no larger than a grain of rice, glowing faint blue.
"It’s out," Dr. Marcus announced. "The nerve pathway is completely undamaged. In fact... her hearing apparatus is perfectly intact."
Vanessa choked back a sob and rushed into the recovery room.
Layla was sitting up on the hospital bed, wearing a soft pair of pink headphones connected to an auditory calibration device. Vance was standing beside her, adjusting the volume dial with incredible gentleness.
Vanessa walked over to the bed, her voice trembling. "Layla baby?"
Layla’s entire body went rigid. Her head snapped toward Vanessa.
For the first time in six years, the little girl turned her eyes toward a sound. She touched her ears, then looked up at her mother with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"M... M... Mommy?" a tiny, raspy voice squeezed out of Layla’s throat.
Vanessa collapsed onto her knees beside the bed, sobbing uncontrollably as she pulled her daughter into her arms. "Yes! Yes, baby, it’s Mommy! It’s Mommy!"

Standing in the corner of the room, Vance Thorne adjusted his jacket, his icy heart thawing as he watched the mother and daughter. He made a quiet vow right then and there.
Chester Aldrich and everyone behind him were going to burn.
