Chapter 6 - Two Worlds, One Fortress

The next twenty-four hours were a blur of strategy, protection, and unspoken tension.
Moving into the Thorne fortress wasn't just a safety precaution; it was a crash course in living with a man who commanded an army. Yet, beneath the high-tech security grids and armed guards patrolling the perimeter, Vanessa discovered a side of Vance Thorne that the media never spoke of.
In the mornings, the terrifying mafia king sat at a sunlit breakfast table, patiently cutting crusts off toast for Lily and learning new sign language phrases with Layla.
"Look, Mommy!" Layla squeaked, her voice getting stronger every hour as she practiced speaking. She pointed to Vance. "Uncle Vance showed me the water!"
Vanessa walked into the dining hall, wearing a sleek cream-colored pantsuit Vance’s team had tailored for her upcoming board meeting. "Did he now?"
Vance looked up, his sharp gaze lingering on Vanessa longer than necessary. His eyes softened. "She’s a fast learner. She picked up twenty new spoken words yesterday."
"Thank you, Vance," Vanessa said sincerely, sitting across from him. "For everything. Layla hasn't smiled this much since... well, ever."
"She’s a resilient kid," Vance said, taking a sip of dark coffee. "Reminds me of Lily after her mother passed. Kids are stronger than we give them credit for. It’s the adults we have to worry about."
A knock sounded at the door. Kaelen, Vance’s second-in-command, stepped inside, handing Vance a encrypted tablet.
"Commander," Kaelen reported in a low tone. "Chester Aldrich just called an emergency press conference at Whitmore Headquarters. He’s claiming Vanessa has been declared unfit due to severe psychological distress, and he’s invoking the emergency buyout clause."
Vanessa stood up, her knuckles turning white. "He can't do that!"
"He’s desperate," Vance said calmly, standing up and buttoning his charcoal suit jacket. "Desperate men make stupid mistakes. Kaelen, bring the primary escort. It’s time we pay the board of directors a visit."

Vance walked over to Vanessa, offering his arm. "Ready to take back what's yours?"
Vanessa took his arm, feeling the solid, unyielding strength beneath his coat. "More than ready."
