Chapter 3 - The Shadow King Emerges

Vanessa stared at the man in total disbelief.

Vance Thorne was a legend whispered in the highest circles of power and the deepest underbellies of the criminal world. A former Navy SEAL Commander whose unit was declared ghost operatives, he had retired from military service only to inherit the Thorne Syndicate—a multi-billion-dollar private defense and intelligence empire. He was the undisputed Shadow King of the Eastern Seaboard. A man whom government officials and mafia lords alike feared to cross.

And he was currently wearing a cheap forty-dollar rental security jacket.

"Why are you here, Mr. Thorne?" Vanessa asked, her voice steady despite the chaos around her.

Vance turned back to Vanessa, his harsh expression instantly softening as his eyes drifted to Layla. The little girl hadn't flinched when Vance took down Chester’s guards. Instead, she peeked out from behind her mother’s shoulder, reaching her tiny hand toward Vance again.

Vance knelt, bringing his imposing six-foot-four frame down to eye level with Layla. He raised his hands and gently began signing in American Sign Language:

【You are safe now. I will let no one hurt you.】

Layla’s big, brown eyes filled with wonder. She signed back: 【Who are you?】

【A friend. And a dad,】 Vance signed back, a faint, genuine smile gracing his hardened features. 【My daughter Lily is eight, just like you.】

Turning back to Vanessa, Vance stood up. "I was here tonight because my intel network flagged suspicious off-grid signals originating from this venue. Signals matching black-market military gear stolen from my defense contracts three years ago. I didn't expect to find it inside a child’s ear canal."

Chester stumbled backward, trying to reach the door. "This is insane! You have no proof! I am the Chairman of the Board!"

"You were the Chairman of the Board," Vance corrected smoothly. He pulled out a encrypted satellite phone and pressed a single button. "Kaelen, lock down the building. No one leaves. Seize all servers belonging to Aldrich Medical."

Within seconds, the blare of silent security alarms vibrated through the floorboards. The main doors of the grand estate were slammed shut and sealed by armored operatives dressed in unmarked black gear who seemed to appear out of thin air.

Vanessa looked at Vance, realizing the gravity of the situation. "Can... can the device be removed?"

"Not here," Dr. Harrison warned nervously. "It’s too close to the brainstem. One wrong move, and the electrical impulse could cause permanent nerve damage."

Vance stepped up to Vanessa, looking directly into her eyes. The authority in his presence was suffocating, yet somehow, for the first time in five years, Vanessa felt completely protected.

"My private medical team is already flying in," Vance said firmly. "I have the best neuro-surgeons in the Western hemisphere on my payroll. She will be operated on at my estate tonight."

May you like

"Your estate?" Vanessa hesitated. "Mr. Thorne, I don't know you."

"You don't know me, Mrs. Whitmore, but Chester Aldrich does," Vance replied, casting a dangerous glance at the trembling chairman. "And right now, if you stay in your house, your daughter won't survive the night. Chester’s partners realize the secret is out. They will come to erase the evidence."
