Chapter 4 - The Retaliation

Dawn broke with a storm rolling over the city. At 7:15 AM, as Naomi was preparing to finish her shift, three city police officers walked into the ER, accompanied by Dr. Patterson and a man in a tailored blue suit—Arthur Reed, Marcus’s father.
Arthur Reed was a man in his late fifties with silver hair and eyes as hard as slate. He carried himself with the supreme authority of a judge who decided who lived and who rotted in a cell.
"Naomi Vale?" Officer Miller asked, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. "You’re under arrest."
Naomi stood straight. "On what grounds?"
"Assault, grand theft of narcotics, and medical malpractice," Arthur Reed said, his voice smooth and toxic. "You attacked my son Marcus in Bay Seven last night, stole controlled substances from the dispensary, and altered patient charts to slander my family name."
"That’s a lie," Naomi said calmly. "Marcus assaulted Elise Harper. The security cameras—"
"The security cameras suffered an unfortunate system failure at 2:30 AM," Dr. Patterson interrupted, looking at the floor. "There is no footage, Naomi."
Naomi’s chest tightened. They were wiping the slate clean, just like they had done with her sister.
"Take her into custody," Arthur ordered the officers.
Before the handcuffs could click around Naomi's wrists, the heavy doors of the ER slid open. Dominic Thorne walked in, flanked by two towering men in dark trench coats. He walked with a slight limp from his wound, but his presence filled the entire room with an suffocating pressure.
"I’d suggest you take your hands off her, Officer," Dominic said softly.
Arthur Reed narrowed his eyes. "Thorne. This is city police business. Stay out of it."
"It became my business the moment your worthless son put his hands on a woman in my sight," Dominic replied, stepping directly between Arthur and Naomi. "And as for the security footage—my private tech team backed up the entire hospital server at 2:45 AM. I have three angles showing Marcus fracturing Miss Harper’s wrist, and one very clear angle of you, Magistrate Reed, attempting to bribe the hospital director twenty minutes ago."

Arthur's face turned ash gray. "You wouldn't dare leak that."
"Try me," Dominic murmured. "Or take your corrupt cops and clear out before I make this personal."
