Chapter 3 - The Nurse's War

By 5:00 AM, the ER had settled into a eerie lull. Elise Harper was resting safely in an undisclosed room on the fourth floor under a fake name, guarded by two unassuming men in black suits who had arrived silently on Dominic Thorne’s command.
Naomi sat in the breakroom, cradling a paper cup of bitter black coffee. Dominic sat across from her, wearing a clean charcoal sweater his men had brought him. The color had returned to his cheeks, though his eyes remained dark and calculating.
"You aren't surprised," Dominic said, setting a leather-bound notebook down on the table between them. "I found this in your locker while my men were securing the perimeter."
Naomi’s hand froze around her mug. "You broke into my locker?"
"I investigate anyone who saves my life," Dominic said smoothly. He opened the notebook. Inside were page after page of meticulously handwritten entries: dates, medical record numbers, injury descriptions, and names of high-profile men—politicians, real estate moguls, high-ranking police officers—alongside the names of bruised, terrified women who had passed through St. Catherine’s ER over the past five years.
"It’s a ledger," Dominic noted, flipping a page. "Every time a victim was silenced by a non-disclosure agreement or threatened into dropping charges, you documented the truth."
"It’s not a ledger," Naomi said, her voice dropping. "It’s evidence. Medical records get 'lost' when rich men hurt women in this city. Charts get deleted. X-rays disappear. I promised myself after my sister died six years ago that I wouldn't let them erase these women."
Dominic listened, his expression unreadable. "Your sister?"
"Her name was Clara," Naomi said, the old anger burning hot in her throat. "Her husband was a state senator. When she died, the coroner called it an accidental fall down the stairs. Just like Elise. I knew the truth, but I was twenty-two and powerless. I couldn't save Clara. So I started writing everything down."
Dominic touched the page where Marcus Reed’s name was fresh in black ink. "You’re waging a private war against the most powerful men in this city, Nurse Vale. Armed with nothing but a pen and a stethoscope."

"It’s all I have."
Dominic closed the notebook with a heavy snap. "Not anymore."
