Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Two years later.
The morning sun warmed the expansive green lawn of the Bennett family estate outside Chicago—a bright, sprawling home filled with sunlight, laughter, and the patter of tiny running feet.
Emily sat on the wooden porch swing, sipping a cup of hot coffee while watching two-year-old Victoria chase a golden retriever across the grass, her high-pitched giggles echoing through the morning air.
Footsteps approached softly from behind. Strong, warm arms wrapped around Emily’s shoulders, pulling her back against a familiar, comforting chest.
"She's going to wear that dog out before breakfast," James said, a warm chuckle rumbling in his chest as he leaned down to kiss the top of Emily's head. He was officially retired from active military service now, spending his days tending to his garden, building wooden toys for his granddaughter, and being the rock his family could always lean on.
"Let her try," Emily smiled, leaning back against her father and resting her hand over his. "She has her grandfather's stamina."
Emily looked out over the horizon, watching the golden sunlight catch the edges of the trees. Life wasn't perfect, and the memories of those dark, terrifying months in the Chicago apartment still lingered occasionally like the ghost of a winter storm. But every time doubt or fear tried to creep back in, she thought of that single afternoon—the day her father walked into her bedroom, ignored the threats, and pulled back the blue blanket.
They had spent months trying to convince the world she was weak, emotional, and broken. They never imagined her father wasn't just a visitor. He was her rescuer. And she was never, ever going to be a prisoner again.
"Dad?" Emily whispered.
"Yeah, Em?"

"Thank you for pulling back the blanket."
James tightened his embrace, resting his chin gently on her hair. "Always, sweetheart. Always."
