Chapter 4 - The Hospital Exodus

The transition to the military base hospital was swift and secure.

By evening, Emily was resting in a sterile, sunlit private room on the obstetrics ward, surrounded by top-tier medical specialists who were monitoring both her recovery and the health of her unborn baby. The bruises across her ribs and arms were already beginning to purple, a stark testament to the systematic abuse she had endured, but an ultrasound confirmed the baby was remarkably resilient, kicking softly against the monitor as if sensing the danger had passed.

Colonel James Bennett sat in the armchair beside the bed, his fingers laced together, staring out the window at the distant runways of the base. The uniform jacket was draped over the back of the chair, his shirtsleeves rolled up to reveal forearms corded with muscle and old scars from decades of service.

"Dad?" Emily’s voice was soft, raspy from days of crying and disuse.

James turned instantly, his tough, unyielding military demeanor melting away the second his eyes met hers. He leaned forward, taking her fragile hand in his large, calloused palm. "I'm here, Em. I'm right here."

"I'm sorry," she whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I was so scared. Ryan said... he said if I told you, you would be disappointed in me. He said nobody would ever believe a hysterical pregnant woman over a successful businessman."

James felt a fresh surge of white-hot fury, but he forced himself to breathe evenly, keeping his voice steady for her sake.

"Listen to me, Emily," James said, bringing her hand up to press a gentle kiss against her knuckles. "Look at me."

Emily looked into his eyes.

"You are my daughter," James said, every word weighted with absolute conviction. "You are the strongest person I know. You survived a warzone in that apartment every single day, keeping my grandchild safe under impossible conditions. You have nothing to apologize for. The only person who should be sorry is the coward who ever made you feel like you were alone."

Emily let out a ragged sob, squeezing her father's hand as the last remnants of the fear that had paralyzed her for months finally began to dissolve.

"The doctors said the baby is healthy," she whispered, a faint smile breaking through her tears.

James smiled back, his own eyes glistening with unshed moisture. "I know. I saw the monitor. That kid's a fighter. Takes after their mother—and their grandfather."

Just then, a soft knock sounded at the door. Master Sergeant Miller stepped into the room, holding a thick manila folder. He caught James's eye and gave a subtle, respectful nod.

"Colonel," Miller said quietly. "We've secured their apartment. The local police have fully transferred jurisdiction to federal and military investigators given the interstate nature of Ryan's financial assets and the protection orders we've filed. Furthermore... we found something in Ryan's home office safe that explains why he was so desperate to keep you from looking beneath that blanket."
