Chapter 3 - The Interrogation and the Arrest

Within ten minutes, the apartment was transformed. The cramped bedroom, once a suffocating tomb of silence and isolation, was now controlled by military investigators and civilian paramedics.
Emily lay propped up against the pillows, a warm blanket draped over her shoulders while a female medic gently checked her vital signs. The physical pain was immense, but the psychological weight lifting from her chest was suffocatingly heavy. For fourteen months, she had believed she was entirely alone—that no one would ever believe her over Ryan’s smooth, corporate charm and Linda’s venomous gaslighting.
Now, her father stood at the foot of the bed, his expression unreadable, flanked by two military police officers who had effectively sealed off the apartment from the outside world.
Ryan and Linda were seated side-by-side on the small floral sofa in the living room, sweating under the watchful gaze of the master sergeant.
"Mr. Morrison," the lead investigator, a sharp-eyed captain named Miller who had arrived with the backup, addressed Ryan with cold professional detachment. "We have photographs of the victim's injuries, statements from neighbors who reported hearing screams through the thin walls over the past six months, and digital logs showing you confiscated her phone and isolated her from her family."
"It's a misunderstanding!" Ryan stammered, his corporate veneer completely shredded. He looked toward the bedroom door, raising his voice so Emily could hear him. "Emily! Tell them! Tell them we just argued! Tell them it was an accident! We're a family—we're going to have a baby!"
Emily flinched at the sound of his voice, curling slightly inward.
James heard him. The Colonel’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. He walked out of the bedroom, crossing the living room with slow, deliberate strides until he stood directly over Ryan.
Ryan looked up, swallowing hard. "Colonel... please. Let's talk man-to-man. We can handle this privately. No need to ruin my career, my reputation..."
"Your career?" James interrupted, his voice a low, lethal hiss. "You laid hands on my pregnant daughter. You bruised her ribs, you bruised her belly, and you made her terrified to speak her own name in her own home."
"She was unstable!" Linda suddenly chimed in, pointing a trembling finger toward the bedroom. "She cried all the time! She didn't want the baby! She tried to hurt herself!"
James didn't even look at Linda. He simply raised his hand and signaled the MPs.
"Cuff them," James commanded.
"You can't do this!" Ryan shouted as the heavy steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists, jerking him violently to his feet. "You're abusing your authority! This is illegal!"

"I'm a father protecting his child," James said coldly as Ryan and Linda were hauled toward the front door. "And as for my authority? You're about to find out just how far the U.S. military goes to protect its own when someone hurts a soldier's family."
As the door slammed shut behind the handcuffed couple, the apartment finally fell quiet. James exhaled a long, shuddering breath, closed his eyes for a brief moment to steady his fracturing composure, and turned back toward the bedroom to see his daughter.
