Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Courthouse Corridor

Three months later, the preliminary hearings for the federal trial began.

Emily was now eight months pregnant, glowing with health and strength. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by a radiant, fierce resolve. She walked down the marble corridors of the federal courthouse on her father’s arm, flanked by two federal marshals. Her civilian clothes were sharp, elegant, and professional—a stark contrast to the oversized, faded house dresses she had been forced to wear during her months of isolation.

As they approached the courtroom doors, they crossed paths with a group of correctional officers escorting prisoners from the holding cells.

At the center of the group was Ryan Morrison.

He looked unrecognizable. His hair was cropped close to his scalp, his skin pasty and gaunt from months of jail food and stress. The bespoke suits were gone, replaced by a standard-issue prisoner jumpsuit that hung loosely on his frame.

When Ryan saw Emily walking tall, radiant, and supported by her decorated military father, he stopped dead in his tracks. The correctional officers jerked him forward, but he planted his feet, staring at her with a mixture of shock and desperate, pathetic pleading.

"Emily..." Ryan rasped, his voice cracking. "Em... please. Look at me."

Emily stopped. She didn't flinch. She didn't cower. She simply turned her head and looked down at him with an expression of absolute, chilling indifference.

"Please," Ryan begged, taking a half-step forward before the guards yanked him back. "Drop the charges. We can talk about the divorce settlement. We can co-parent. Don't do this to me, Em. Remember the good times? Remember when we first moved into that apartment?"

James stepped smoothly in front of Emily, blocking Ryan from her line of sight, towering over him like an immovable wall of stone.

"She doesn't remember you, Morrison," James said, his voice cold and devoid of any human warmth. "And the only place you'll be co-parenting from is behind a federal penitentiary fence."

"Colonel, please—" Ryan choked out, panic flaring in his eyes as he realized his charm and manipulation no longer worked on anyone.

"Save your breath for the judge," James said, turning his back on him. "You're going to need it."

Emily rested her hand lightly on her swollen belly, feeling the strong, healthy kick of her baby. She looked past her father one last time at the man who had tried to break her spirit, feeling nothing—not anger, not fear, just the absolute freedom of a survivor who had reclaimed her life.

"Let's go, Dad," Emily said clearly.

"Lead the way, Captain," James smiled gently, offering his arm as they stepped through the heavy double doors into the courtroom.
