Chapter 2 - The Reinforcements Arrive

The heavy, rhythmic thud of combat boots echoed through the narrow, carpeted hallway of the apartment building. It wasn't the tentative knock of a neighbor or the hurried steps of a delivery driver. It was the calculated, disciplined cadence of men trained to move as a singular, unstoppable unit.
Ryan’s face drained of color. The smug, arrogant defiance that had puffed up his chest moments before vanished completely, replaced by the hollow panic of a cornered predator. Linda’s hands flew to her mouth, her fingers trembling as she stared wide-eyed toward the front door.
"What... what is that?" Linda stammered, her voice cracking. "Who did you call, Colonel? You can't just bring people into our home—"
"Quiet," Colonel James Bennett whispered. It wasn't a shout. It was a low, seismic rumble that commanded absolute obedience.
Before Ryan could step toward the door to block it, the deadbolt clicked. The heavy apartment door swung open, revealing two military police officers in crisp uniforms, standing on either side of a senior master sergeant whose expression was carved from granite. Behind them, through the open doorway, the gray afternoon light caught the silver insignia on their shoulders.
"Colonel," the master sergeant saluted sharply, his eyes sweeping the room in a fraction of a second, cataloging every detail: Ryan’s defensive posture, Linda’s frozen terror, and James standing protectively beside the bed with his hands clenched into white-knuckled fists.
"At ease, Sergeant," James said, his voice terrifyingly calm. He never broke eye contact with Ryan. "Secure the perimeter. No one leaves this apartment. And call base medical—I want an ambulance and an emergency obstetrics team here immediately."
"Right away, sir," the sergeant snapped, stepping inside with the two MPs.
Ryan backed away until his knees hit the edge of the dresser. "You... you can't do this! This is a private residence! You have no jurisdiction here! We're civilians!"
"Civilians?" James repeated, taking a slow, deliberate step away from Emily’s bed. Each step sounded like a gavel falling in a courtroom. "You locked up my daughter. You systematically starved her of contact, stripped her of her autonomy, and beat her while she was carrying my grandchild. You didn't treat her like a civilian, Ryan. You treated her like a prisoner of war in a cell of your own making."
"She fell!" Linda shrieked, her voice pitching up into a hysterical octave as she tried to salvage the lie. "She's clumsy! Hormones make her dizzy! Ask her! Emily, tell your father you fell in the bathroom!"
James stopped. He turned his head slowly, fixing Linda with a glare so ferocious it made her recoil as if physically struck.

"If you speak another word," James murmured, "I won't let the legal system handle you."
The threat hung in the air, heavy and absolute. Linda clamped her mouth shut, her eyes darting frantically toward the door, realizing too late that the walls they had built around Emily for months had just been shattered by a single pull of a blue blanket.
