Chapter 8 - The Safehouse and the Safe

Back in the estate's master study, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of ozone and impending reckoning.

Ryan Mercer stood pinned against his own desk, his bespoke suit wrinkled, sweat beading on his forehead. The digital screen behind him flashed an automated security warning: ACCESS DENIED. SYSTEM LOCKED BY MASTER OVERRIDE.

“Fifteen years, Ryan,” Alessandro said, walking slowly toward him, his footsteps echoing in the large room like the ticking of a doom-laden clock. “Fifteen years I trusted you with my father’s legacy. Fifteen years I treated you like family.”

“You don't understand,” Ryan stammered, his polished arrogance finally cracking under the weight of absolute defeat. “Your father... he was holding the family back! He was too soft for the modern era! I built this empire with you, Alessandro. I made you what you are!”

“You made me?” Alessandro stopped two feet away from him, his voice dropping into a lethal whisper. “You framed an innocent boy—Vanessa’s brother Liam—for embezzlement just so you could use him as a hostage to blackmail a terrified girl into spying for Boston. You sold our shipping routes, compromised our captains, and tried to engineer my assassination under the guise of a rebel ambush.”

Ryan swallowed hard, his eyes darting to the armed guards by the door. “You can’t prove the framing. The files on Liam were scrubbed—”

“Not all of them,” a soft voice interrupted from the doorway.

The heavy oak door pushed open further, and Vanessa Hale walked in. She was no longer wearing her bridal gown. She wore a simple dark coat, her eyes clear, her chin held high. Behind her walked a young man—thin, pale, wearing an oversized jacket, but breathing and alive.

“Liam?” Ryan whispered, his color entirely draining.

Liam Hale stepped forward, his fists clenched. “They kept me in a basement for two years, Ryan. Fed me through a slot in the door. And do you know who visited me last month to gloat? Not Victor Vance. You. You wore your custom silver cufflinks right in front of my face.”

Ryan looked from Liam back to Alessandro. He realized there was no escape. The trap had snapped shut with mathematical precision.

“Luca,” Alessandro said without turning around. “Take him down to the lower vault. Give him the hospitality he deserves. We’ll let the eastern captains decide what to do with a rat.”

Two enforcers stepped forward, grabbed Ryan by the arms, and hauled him screaming toward the service elevator. The heavy door closed, cutting off his desperate pleas.
