Chapter 2 - The Whispers in the Dark

The heavy oak door of room 412 in the staff quarters clicked shut, sealing out the hollow echoes of the grand hall. For Sophia Bennett, the silence inside the cramped room felt heavy, suffocating, and charged with an invisible terror. The smell of yeast and flour still clung to the fabric of her apron—an ordinary reminder of a morning that had turned into a nightmare.

Emma sat on the edge of the narrow cot, her small legs swinging rhythmically, though her lower lip still trembled. She clutched Mr. Buttons, her stuffed rabbit, against her chest as if it were a shield.

Sophia knelt before her daughter, her hands shaking so violently she had to press them against her own knees to steady them. Twelve years. For twelve years, she had polished silver, ironed silk, and kept her head down in the Moretti estate. She knew the golden rule of working for a man like Alessandro Moretti: you see nothing, you hear nothing, and you exist only to serve. In the underworld of the Eastern Seaboard, curiosity was a fatal disease.

And now, her four-year-old daughter had blown the whistle right in the middle of a wedding attended by the most dangerous men on the coast.

“Emma,” Sophia whispered, her voice cracking. “Look at me, sweetheart. Think carefully. When you saw that man by the back gate... did he see you? Did he look at your window?”

Emma’s blue eyes widened. She paused, tilting her head as she searched her memory.

“No, Mama,” the little girl said softly. “He kept his head down. He wore a big hood, like a wizard in my storybook. He gave Miss Vanessa a thick paper envelope. And Miss Vanessa gave him a small box. She was crying. She said, ‘This is all I have left, please leave Liam alone.’”

Sophia felt the blood drain from her face. Liam.

Vanessa Hale’s younger brother. A boy who had vanished from university two years ago under mysterious circumstances—rumored to have skipped town with gambling debts owed to dangerous loan sharks. Everyone in society thought Liam had fled to Europe or gone into hiding. But if Vanessa had been paying someone off behind the scenes...

Before Sophia could process the horrifying implications, a sharp, three-note knock rapped against the door.

Sophia froze. Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird.

“Open up, Mrs. Bennett. It’s Luca.”

The deep, gravelly voice of Luca Marino—Alessandro’s oldest enforcer and head of security—cut through the wood.

Sophia stood up slowly, her knees trembling. She unlocked the door and pulled it open. Luca stood in the dim corridor, his broad shoulders filling the frame, his graying hair cropped close, his expression unreadable. Behind him stood two armed guards in dark suits.

“Mr. Moretti wants a word,” Luca said, his eyes shifting past Sophia to look down at the little girl. There was no menace in his gaze, but there was an absolute, unyielding authority.

“Mr. Marino, please,” Sophia stammered, stepping forward to block his view. “She’s only four. She didn't mean to ruin anything. If we need to leave, we’ll pack our bags right now. We won’t say a word to anyone, I swear on my life—”

“Calm down, Sophia,” Luca interrupted, his voice surprisingly gentle. “The boss doesn’t kill children for telling the truth. And he doesn't punish mothers for protecting their daughters. Get your coats. You’re being moved to the west wing for the night.”

May you like

“The west wing?” Sophia repeated, bewildered.

“Orders of the boss,” Luca said, turning down the hall. “Come along, little one. Mr. Moretti has questions, and in this house, answers are currency.”
