Chapter 5 - The Game of Wolves

Morning light cut across the Atlantic horizon, washing the Moretti estate in a pale, golden glow.
In the main executive study, Ryan Mercer poured himself a cup of black coffee from the silver service tray. He checked his gold Rolex watch. 8:15 AM. Everything was proceeding according to schedule.
The wedding had collapsed yesterday in front of the elite. The Moretti organization was whispering about weakness. By noon, the eastern captains would start calling emergency meetings to question Alessandro’s stability, paving the way for Ryan to step in as interim head of the syndicate, backed by his secret partners in Boston.
A soft knock interrupted his thoughts.
“Enter.”
The heavy door pushed open, and Alessandro walked in. He looked composed, wearing a fresh black suit, his tie neatly knotted. There was no sign of distress on his face—only an unsettling, absolute stillness.
“Alessandro,” Ryan said, smoothing his gray lapel with a practiced, sympathetic smile. “I was wondering when you’d surface. The captains are already restless. They’re talking about yesterday’s fiasco. Word is spreading that the girl’s accusation was just the tip of the iceberg.”
Alessandro walked over to his desk, took his seat, and rested his hands flat on the polished mahogany. He looked at Ryan with an unblinking gaze.
“Let them talk,” Alessandro said evenly. “What’s done is done. Vanessa is locked in her suite, hysterical. I haven't decided whether to put her on a plane to Europe or let Luca handle her.”
Ryan’s eyes flickered with a brief, calculating satisfaction—a microscopic shift that only a man who had studied him for fifteen years could catch.
“Wisdom dictates severance, boss,” Ryan advised, his tone dripping with professional concern. “A compromised woman in the house is a liability we cannot afford. Especially now, when Boston has been hitting our shipments with such uncanny precision.”
“Speaking of Boston,” Alessandro interrupted, leaning back in his leather chair. “I received a message early this morning through an intermediary.”
Ryan’s posture stiffened by a fraction of an inch. “Oh? What kind of message?”
“Victor Vance wants to meet,” Alessandro said, watching Ryan’s face like a hawk. “He claims he has a proposition that will secure our eastern shipping routes permanently. He wants to meet tonight at midnight—at the old disused rail yard down by the harbor.”
Ryan’s mind raced. A midnight meeting with Victor Vance at the rail yard? That was outside Moretti territory. If Alessandro went alone or with standard guards, Victor’s ambush team could wipe him out in one clean sweep, leaving Ryan to inherit the entire empire without firing a single shot.
“A trap, obviously,” Ryan said smoothly, shaking his head. “You can't go, Alessandro. It’s too risky. Let me send a strike team, or better yet, let me handle the negotiations.”
“No,” Alessandro said, his voice dropping into a low, uncompromising register. “I’m going. Alone. Just like Vance requested. But I need you to prepare the contingency transfer documents, Ryan. In case I don't come back, I want all operational control of the syndicate legally signed over to my most trusted adviser.”
Ryan had to fight hard to keep the triumphant grin off his face. Fifteen years. Fifteen years of playing second fiddle, of bowing to a man whose father had treated him like a glorified secretary. The throne was finally within his grasp.

“You can count on me, boss,” Ryan said, bowing his head with practiced humility. “I’ll have the documents ready on your desk by sunset.”
“I know you will, Ryan,” Alessandro replied softly, a cold shadow crossing his eyes. “I know you will.”
