Chapter 4 - The Tears in the Bridal Suite

The bridal suite on the third floor was bathed in the soft glow of wall sconces. The room was a museum of misplaced luxury: a magnificent velvet sofa, a dressing table covered in expensive perfumes, and, draped carelessly over an antique chair, a wedding gown worth more than a small house.
Inside the adjoining bathroom, sitting on the cold marble floor with her knees pulled up to her chest, sat Vanessa Hale.
She was still wearing her satin slip, her hair partially unpinned, clinging in damp strands to her tear-stained cheeks. Every breath she took came in ragged, trembling gasps.
A soft click sounded at the bedroom door.
Vanessa flinched, pulling herself tighter. “I told you, I won't do anything else!” she cried out, her voice breaking. “The wedding is ruined! He knows! Everyone knows! Just leave my brother alone, please—!”
“He’s not here to hurt you, Miss Hale.”
Vanessa froze. The deep, resonant voice didn't belong to the hooded man at the gate. It didn't belong to Ryan Mercer.
It belonged to Alessandro.
She slowly raised her head. Alessandro stood in the doorway, his suit jacket removed, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing the lean, powerful build of a man forged in violence. He wasn't holding a weapon. His expression wasn't twisted in the blind fury she had feared for days. Instead, he looked at her with a profound, terrifying calm.
Alessandro walked into the bathroom, knelt down beside her on the cold marble, and extended a clean white handkerchief.
Vanessa stared at the cloth, her hands trembling as she took it.
“You didn't eat breakfast this morning,” Alessandro said quietly, his voice dangerously soft. “You’ve lost twelve pounds in the last two months. And every time Ryan Mercer walked into the room, you stopped breathing.”
Vanessa squeezed her eyes shut, fresh tears spilling over her lashes. “You... you should kill me. I broke the code. I leaked the shipping schedules. I betrayed the family.”
“Why?” Alessandro asked. Not with anger. With a demand for truth that brooked no escape.
“Because they have Liam,” she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. “Two months ago, right after we announced our engagement, a man intercepted Liam outside his law firm. They showed me pictures of him bound to a chair in a basement somewhere in Boston. They said if I didn't copy your logistics logs and pass them through the gate every Tuesday, they would send him back to me piece by piece.”
Alessandro listened, his jaw tightening until the muscle feathered. “And who told them our logistics schedule, Vanessa? Who was the only other man in this house who knew every shipment route by heart?”
Vanessa stopped crying. She looked up slowly, her eyes wide with a horrifying realization.
“Ryan,” she whispered. “When I told Ryan I was scared because of the threats... he told me he would handle it. He told me the only way to save Liam was to play along with the couriers until the wedding was over, and that he had a secret plan to rescue him.”
A dark, humorless smile touched the corners of Alessandro’s mouth.
“A secret plan,” Alessandro muttered, standing up and towering over her. “Ryan didn't want to rescue Liam, Vanessa. Ryan used your love for your brother as a leash to turn you into his spy, while he sold our empire out to Boston from the inside.”

Alessandro reached down, offering his hand to the woman he was supposed to marry.
“Get up, Vanessa,” he said, his eyes flashing with the cold fire of a predator ready to strike. “The game is over. Now, we play mine.”
