Chapter 7 - Isabella’s Desperate Gamble

Deep within the bowels of the Midtown holding facility, the reality of her new existence was finally crushing down on Isabella Rossi.
Stripped of her designer clothing, her jewelry, and her phone, she sat in a stark, gray concrete interrogation room. Her hair was a tangled nest, her fingernails chipped, and the silk of her ruined crimson gown felt like a mockery of the life she had lost.
The heavy steel door swung open.
A public defender—a tired-looking man named Henderson with rumpled clothes and a stack of discouraging paperwork—walked in and tossed a manila folder onto the metal table.
"Ms. Rossi," Henderson said bluntly, taking a seat across from her. "I’ve reviewed the preliminary briefs from the District Attorney’s office, as well as the civil filings submitted by Judge Sterling's legal team."
Isabella leaned forward, her eyes bloodshot and frantic. "What are my options? Can we plea bargain? Can we claim temporary insanity? My father can—"
"Your father is currently in Mount Sinai Hospital recovering from a cardiac event while his entire estate is being liquidated by Thorne Enterprises," Henderson interrupted without a shred of sympathy. "Ms. Rossi, let me be entirely transparent with you. You are facing three distinct felony counts: Aggravated Assault in the Second Degree, Reckless Endangerment, and Attempted Fetal Homicide. Combined with the civil injunctions filed by Judge Sterling, the state has an airtight case."
Isabella shook her head frantically, her voice rising in panic. "No! No, you don't understand! I have leverage! Julian Vance told me things! He gave me documents about Thorne Enterprises' offshore accounts! I can trade them for a reduced sentence!"
Henderson let out a dry, humorless chuckle. "Julian Vance was arrested by federal marshals three hours ago for corporate espionage and securities fraud. His offices were raided, and his legal team has already cut a deal with the DOJ, throwing you under the bus as the sole instigator of the hospital assault."
Isabella stared at her lawyer, her mind spinning out of control. Every exit was blocked. Every ally had vanished. She was completely, utterly alone.
"There's no deal, Ms. Rossi," Henderson said, standing up and gathering his files. "Your arraignment is at 9:00 AM tomorrow. I suggest you plead guilty and throw yourself at the mercy of the court. It’s the only way you won't die behind bars."
He walked out, leaving her alone in the chilling silence of the concrete box.

Isabella buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, inconsolable rage and despair. She had believed that a single vicious kick inside a luxury hospital suite would end a marriage and secure her place at the top of New York society.
Instead, she had built her own tomb.
