Chapter 3 - The ER and the Threat

The chaos that followed was a blur of flashing white lights, sterile smells, and the frantic barking of medical jargon.

Within ninety seconds of Judge Sterling’s entrance, an emergency obstetric team had rushed into the VIP suite with a portable gurney. Khloe was carefully lifted onto the padded surface, her hand still locked tightly in Marcus’s grip. Every bump of the wheels rolling down the private corridor brought a fresh whimper of pain from her lips, fueling the cold, black fury burning inside Marcus’s chest.

"Mr. Thorne, you have to stay behind the red line," the lead physician instructed firmly as they pushed the gurney through the double doors of the Emergency Operating Wing.

"I go where my wife goes," Marcus stated, his voice flat, absolute, and impossible to argue with.

The doctor took one look at the terrifying expression in Marcus's eyes and wisely stepped aside, allowing the billionaire to stride beside the gurney all the way to the trauma bay doors.

Back in the luxury suite, the atmosphere had shifted from a medical emergency to a crime scene.

Isabella Rossi stood paralyzed by the center of the room. The security guards flanked her left and right, ensuring she couldn't move an inch. Elaine Parker had been gently escorted out by hospital staff to give a formal statement, leaving only Judge Arthur Sterling behind.

Arthur slowly walked toward Isabella. He didn't yell. He didn't raise a fist. He simply stood before her, exuding the intimidating aura of a man who spent his life dismantling criminals with a single clause in a statute.

"You are twenty-eight years old, Ms. Rossi," Arthur said quietly, his voice like grinding stones. "Daughter of Lawrence Rossi. Heir to a crumbling textile fortune that has been surviving on the fumes of my nephew-in-law's corporate charity for the past three years."

Isabella swallowed hard, her throat dry as dust. "My father... my father will hear about this. You can't just hold me here. This is an illegal detention!"

"Detention?" Arthur let out a dry, humorless laugh. "Ms. Rossi, you just committed felony aggravated assault on a pregnant woman, resulting in potential fetal distress, captured in 4K resolution by an enterprise-grade security system. In the state of New York, that carries a mandatory minimum prison sentence that your father's money won't even scratch the surface of."

"It was self-defense!" Isabella shrieked, her voice cracking as the panic finally broke through her porcelain veneer. "She provoked me! She—"

"Save your theatrics for a bailiff," Arthur interrupted, turning his back on her as he pulled out his phone. "As of right now, your assets are being frozen under emergency civil injunctions pending a multi-million-dollar tort lawsuit for intentional infliction of emotional distress and attempted fetal homicide. You don't have friends left in this city, Isabella. You have cellmates waiting."

Leaving her trembling in the center of the room, Arthur walked out, signaling the guards to lock the heavy mahogany doors behind him.

Meanwhile, down in the waiting area outside the trauma ward, Marcus Thorne sat in a rigid leather chair, his elbows resting on his knees, his face buried in his hands. The immaculate black tuxedo he had worn to the gala now looked like a shroud, stained with a few drops of Khloe’s blood from where he had held her.

The heavy doors of the trauma unit hissed open.

Dr. Vance, the chief of obstetrics, walked out, removing his surgical cap. His expression was serious, cautious, but carried a glimmer of relief.

Marcus was on his feet in a single, fluid motion. He crossed the distance in two strides.

"Talk to me," Marcus demanded.

"She’s stable, Mr. Thorne," Dr. Vance said, holding up a hand to manage the tension. "The trauma to her abdomen was severe, and she suffered acute placental abruption symptoms. We had to administer emergency medication to slow contractions. But... the baby has a steady heartbeat."

Marcus closed his eyes, exhaling a breath he felt he had been holding for an eternity. The sheer weight of terror that had gripped his heart eased just a fraction.

"Can I see her?" Marcus asked, his voice uncharacteristically fragile.

"Not yet. She’s resting under heavy sedation. We need to monitor her for the next twenty-four hours to ensure there’s no internal hemorrhaging or premature labor triggers," the doctor explained. "She’s safe for tonight, Mr. Thorne. But she needs absolute peace. No stress. No shocks."

Marcus nodded slowly. "Thank you, Doctor."

As the physician walked away, Arthur Sterling stepped out of the elevator bank, walking with a measured, deliberate stride. He approached Marcus, handing him a secure encrypted tablet.

"The police have the footage," Arthur said quietly. "The district attorney has already been briefed at his home. They're processing the arrest warrant for Isabella right now. She’ll be picked up before dawn."

Marcus took the tablet, his thumb tracing the smooth glass edge. His eyes were fixed on the double doors of the recovery ward.

"An arrest warrant isn't enough," Marcus murmured, his voice cold enough to shatter glass.

Arthur looked at his nephew-in-law, recognizing the terrifying look of a apex predator whose family had been threatened. "What do you have in mind?"

"Isabella thought she was destroying a marriage," Marcus said slowly, standing up to his full, towering height. "She thought she was playing high society games. By sunrise tomorrow, the Rossi name won't just be out of polite society. It will be erased from the history books of New York commerce entirely."
