Chapter 4 - Unraveling the Conspiracy

Dawn broke over Manhattan, washing the towering glass skyscrapers in a pale, amber glow. But inside the penthouse office of Thorne Enterprises, there was no warmth.

Marcus Thorne sat behind his massive mahogany desk, the city spread out below him like a chessboard. He hadn't slept. A half-empty glass of scotch sat untouched beside a stack of financial dossiers and forensic accounting reports.

The door opened softly, and Elaine Parker stepped inside. She looked exhausted, wearing a fresh blouse, carrying a secure hard drive and a thick manila folder.

"Mr. Thorne," Elaine said softly, setting the folder on the desk. "The internal audit team finished cross-referencing Isabella Rossi’s recent communications and financial transactions."

Marcus didn't look up from the tablet in his hands, where live feeds of Khloe’s hospital room showed her sleeping peacefully under the watchful care of private nurses and Uncle Arthur. "Lay it out for me."

"It wasn't just a sudden fit of rage at the gala," Elaine explained, opening the folder to reveal a complex web of corporate shell companies and text message transcripts. "Isabella’s family business, Rossi Textiles, was three weeks away from complete bankruptcy. They had massive unpaid loans backed by collateral they didn't own."

Marcus’s eyes narrowed. "Go on."

"Three months ago, Isabella began a systematic campaign to undermine Mrs. Thorne's standing in the social circles," Elaine continued, sliding a printout across the desk. "She was feeding malicious rumors to the tabloid press about Mrs. Thorne's health and stability, hoping to trigger a public scandal that would force you into a premature separation or divorce."

Marcus picked up the printout. The text messages were damning—conversations between Isabella and a sleazy tabloid columnist detailing fabricated stories about Khloe’s mental state.

"And the financial backing?" Marcus asked, his voice dropping an octave. "Isabella doesn't have the capital to fund a three-month media smear campaign on her own. Who was paying her bills?"

Elaine hesitated for a second, then tapped the hard drive. "That’s the most interesting part, sir. The funds didn't come from personal accounts. They were channeled through an intermediate venture capital firm called Vanguard Holdings."

Marcus went completely still. Vanguard Holdings.

It wasn't just a venture firm. It was a subsidiary front for Julian Vance—Marcus’s primary corporate rival, a ruthless billionaire who had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Thorne Enterprises' shipping ports for over two years.

"Julian," Marcus whispered, the pieces clicking together with terrifying clarity.

"Yes, sir," Elaine confirmed. "Julian Vance financed Isabella’s social maneuvering, hoping she could infiltrate your inner circle, manipulate you into a high-profile divorce, and secure insider voting shares of Thorne Enterprises through a messy pre-nuptial vulnerability. When Khloe's pregnancy threatened to lock down your succession line permanently... Isabella got desperate."

Desperate enough to kick a seven-month pregnant woman into a marble table inside a luxury hospital suite.

Marcus slowly leaned back in his leather chair. The cold, calculating machinery of his mind began to turn. For years, he had played the corporate game by the rules, keeping his business battles separate from his personal life. But Julian Vance and Isabella Rossi had crossed a sacred boundary. They had touched his wife. They had endangered his unborn child.

Rules no longer applied.

"Elaine," Marcus said, his voice entirely devoid of human warmth.

"Sir?"

"Contact our chief legal counsel, Richard Sterling. Tell him to initiate immediate Chapter 7 involuntary bankruptcy proceedings against Rossi Textiles. Buy up their debt pennies on the dollar by noon."

"Done."

"And contact the board of directors at Vanguard Holdings," Marcus continued, locking his gaze on the Manhattan skyline. "Inform them that Thorne Enterprises is executing an immediate, hostile buyout of their controlling shares. I want Julian Vance bankrupt, broken, and begging on the street corner by the end of the week."

Elaine swallowed hard, nodding once. "Consider it done, Mr. Thorne."

As Elaine turned and walked out of the office, Marcus picked up his phone. He dialed a direct, encrypted line to Arthur Sterling at the hospital.

"Arthur," Marcus said the moment the line connected.

“I’m looking at Khloe right now,” Arthur’s voice came through, steady and sharp. “She’s waking up. Her vitals are stabilizing. The doctors say the baby is safe.”

Marcus closed his eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath of relief. "Thank God."

“What about the other end?” Arthur asked, knowing his nephew-in-law too well.

"Isabella’s family is about to lose everything," Marcus said coldly. "And Julian Vance is about to find out what happens when you wake a sleeping dragon."
