Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Coup

The next morning at 9:00 AM, the emergency emergency board meeting of AeroTech was called at their headquarters in the financial district.

Ethan had spent the entire night trying to reach Victoria. He called her a hundred times. Every call went straight to voicemail. He sent text after text, ranging from furious threats to pathetic apologies:

Victoria, please answer. We need to talk. Mom didn't mean what she said. Victoria, you’re ruining my life over a simple mistake! Call me back! Please, Victoria. I’m sorry. I was out of line. Let's fix this.

No reply.

When Ethan stepped into the AeroTech executive boardroom, his clothes were wrinkled, his eyes bloodshot. The board members—five senior tech investors—were sitting around the large mahogany table with furious expressions.

"Ethan, explain this!" board member Arthur Vance (no relation to Marcus) slammed a newspaper on the table.

The headline was front-page news: AEROTECH CEO ACCUSED OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE; VANGUARD RECALLS $15M LOAN.

"It’s a misunderstanding!" Ethan stammered, holding up his hands. "My wife... my ex-wife... she’s trying to manipulate me! I will secure alternative funding by the end of the day!"

"You won't have to," a cold, smooth voice echoed from the doorway.

The board members stood up in unison.

I stepped into the boardroom. I was wearing a tailored navy-blue Alexander McQueen power suit, my hair swept up, sunglasses hiding the faint bruise near my cheekbone. Beside me was Marcus Vance and two armed private guards.

Ethan stared at me, dumbfounded. "Victoria? What are you doing here?! You can't be in this building!"

"Actually, Ethan, she owns this building," Marcus said, laying a thick binder of stock certificates on the conference table.

"What is this nonsense?!" Ethan shouted. "I built AeroTech! I own 51% of the shares!"

"Correction," I said, stepping to the head of the table. My voice was calm, sharp, and totally devoid of the timid affection Ethan was used to. "You owned 51% when AeroTech was $12 million in debt. In exchange for the secret $50 million bailouts over the last three years, your holding company signed a convertible debt clause with Vanguard Global."

I leaned forward, placing both hands on the table, looking directly into his horrified eyes.

"As of 8:00 AM this morning, Vanguard converted that debt into equity. I now hold 78% of voting shares in AeroTech. You hold 4%."

Ethan’s knees buckled. He grabbed the back of a chair to keep from falling. "You... you’re Vanguard?"

"I am Vanguard," I replied smoothly. "And as majority shareholder, my first motion is to immediately fire you as CEO of AeroTech for cause, revoke your stock options, and initiate a full forensic audit into your personal expenses."

"Victoria, please!" Ethan stumbled toward me, tears springing to his eyes. "You loved me! We’re married! You can't do this to your husband!"

"My husband died the moment his hand hit my face," I said coldly.

I signaled to the guards. "Escort the former CEO out of the building. If he sets foot on company property again, have him arrested."
