Chapter 4 - Frozen Accounts and Broken Cards

By midnight, Ethan and Evelyn were sitting in the lobby of a luxury Five-Star Hotel downtown, surrounded by four quickly packed suitcases.
Evelyn was hyperventilating, fanning herself with a velvet handbag. "That wretched girl! How dare she humiliate us like that! Ethan, call your bank right now! Pay for the suite and hire the best lawyer in California to sue her into the pavement!"
Ethan, sweating profusely, handed his primary corporate Credit Card to the front desk receptionist.
"Sir, I’m sorry," the receptionist said politely after sliding the card. "This card has been declined."
"Declined? That’s impossible! It has a $500,000 limit!" Ethan barked. "Try it again!"
"I tried twice, sir. It says 'Account Terminated by Primary Issuer.'"
Evelyn huffed, pulling out her personal American Express Black card. "Use mine! My son’s bank must just be having a temporary system glitch."
The receptionist swiped Evelyn’s card. A red indicator light flashed on the terminal.
"Ma'am... this card has also been canceled. The issuing bank notes indicate that the account holder, Vanguard Global, has revoked all secondary authorized users."
"Vanguard Global?!" Evelyn shrieked. "What does Vanguard have to do with my card?!"
Ethan’s phone suddenly buzzed violently in his hand. It was a notification from his bank app, followed immediately by an emergency email from his CFO, Greg.
Ethan answered the call, his hands trembling. "Greg? What's going on?"
"Ethan, we’re in critical danger!" Greg screamed over the phone. "Vanguard Asset Management just executed a mandatory loan recall on our $15 million credit facility! They’ve frozen all of AeroTech's operational accounts! Our payroll bounced five minutes ago!"
"What are you talking about?!" Ethan yelled, sinking into a lobby chair as hotel guests stared. "Vanguard gave us that money three years ago!"
"They issued a default notice based on a morality clause violation! They cited criminal domestic battery charges against you! Ethan, if we don't produce $15 million by 5:00 PM tomorrow, Vanguard takes legal ownership of all AeroTech assets and IP! We're bankrupt!"
The phone dropped from Ethan's hand, clattering onto the marble floor.
Evelyn grabbed his shoulders, panic finally breaking through her arrogant facade. "Ethan? What is it? What’s happening?"

Ethan looked up, his eyes bloodshot, pale as a ghost.
"Mother..." he whispered, his voice shaking. "Victoria didn't marry me for my money... I was living off hers."
