Chapter 9 - The Animal Sanctuary Takes Its Due

Three weeks later, the sun broke through the autumn clouds over the grand estate where I had once lain trapped behind my silent medical bed.
The wrought-iron gates at the front entrance were wide open, but no luxury sports cars were parked in the circular drive. Instead, a fleet of large transport vans bearing the emblem of the Global Wildlife and Animal Rescue Foundation lined the driveway.
Dozens of golden retrievers, rescue Labradors, and rehabilitated animals romped across the expansive emerald lawn, barking happily as volunteers set up play areas and temporary enclosures.
I stood on the second-floor balcony, looking down at the vibrant, chaotic life that now filled every corner of the property.
Under the terms of Protocol Black, the mansion and all its surrounding acreage had been legally transferred to the foundation immediately upon my simulated death certificate filing. It was no longer a silent, gilded cage where a killer plotted his inheritance. It was a sanctuary.
My phone vibrated in my pocket.
It was a text message from Samuel.
Trial concluded. Judge handed down consecutive maximum sentences: life without parole for attempted murder and homicide conspiracy, plus twenty years for financial fraud. Jessica took a plea deal for ten years.
I stared at the screen, letting out a long, quiet breath of complete closure.
The trial had been swift. The hidden camera footage, the forensic toxicology reports, and Jessica's own recorded confession left the defense with zero ground to stand on. David had spent the entire court proceeding staring blankly at the floor, realizing too late that his ambition had destroyed everything he ever touched.

Down on the lawn, a small golden retriever puppy looked up toward the balcony, letting out a sharp, joyful bark.
I smiled, turning away from the railing and walking back into the sunlit bedroom where my new life was waiting to begin.
