Chapter 7 - The Interrogation Room Realization

Back in Holding Cell A, I stood leaning against the cool concrete wall, watching David tremble as he tried to comprehend my presence.
"You... you're dead," David stammered, pointing a shaking finger at me. "I watched you flatline! The doctor signed the papers!"
"The doctor was on Samuel’s payroll from the moment we intercepted your first poisoned meal six months ago, David," I replied, my voice steady and cold. "Every dose of heavy metal you carefully measured into my food was replaced with a benign substitute in the hospital lab tests, while the actual toxins were filtered out of my system using experimental chelation therapy at a secure medical facility downtown."
David staggered backward, his knees hitting the metal bench. He sank down heavily, his hands gripping his head as his carefully constructed world collapsed into absolute ruin.
"You tricked me..." he whispered, staring up at me with sheer terror. "All those months... you knew?"
"From day one," I said, stepping closer until I stood right across from him. "I wanted to see how far a man would go when given infinite patience, unconditional love, and a multibillion-dollar fortune. You proved that greed has no bottom."
"Please," David choked out, his voice breaking as he reached out a desperate hand toward my sleeve. "Nora—please. We were married. We shared a life. Don't do this to me. I'll give up everything! Just drop the charges!"
I looked down at his outstretched hand with absolute disgust.
"Our marriage ended the moment you brought your mistress into my bedroom while I lay helpless, measuring my windows for curtains you planned to hang after my funeral," I said quietly. "You wanted my empire, David. Now you'll get to experience what it's like to have nothing at all."
I turned toward the door, signaling the federal marshals.

"Take him away," I commanded.
As David screamed, clawing desperately at the air as the guards hauled him out of the room toward the maximum-security cellblock, I felt a profound, liberating weight lift from my shoulders. The nightmare was over. And for David and Jessica, the real nightmare was only just beginning.
