Chapter 8 - The Shadow from the Past

While David and Jessica awaited their arraignment in separate cellblocks, the federal investigation widened into the corporate labyrinth of Vance Technologies.
Auditors swarmed the corporate headquarters on Wall Street, uncovering a staggering trail of corporate fraud, falsified patent filings, and illicit kickbacks dating back years before our marriage. It turned out David hadn't just tried to murder me for my fortune; he had been embezzling from investors to cover massive personal gambling debts and high-stakes lifestyle expenses.
Samuel walked into my private recovery suite at the downtown medical facility, carrying a thick leather binder.
"The federal prosecutor has added twelve new counts of grand larceny and securities fraud to David’s indictment," Samuel reported, setting the binder on the coffee table. "Furthermore, his former business associates are lining up to testify against him. They're all trying to cut deals to save themselves."
I sat by the window, watching the city skyline glitter in the afternoon sun. I held a cup of hot tea in my hands, feeling the strength returning to my fingers day by day.
"And Jessica?" I asked without turning around.
"Her family distanced themselves within an hour of her arrest," Samuel replied with a faint smile. "Her high-society friends have already deleted her from their social media pages. She's sitting in county jail realizing that designer dresses don't buy prison protection."
"Good," I murmured. "Let them share every cell of the reality they built."
Samuel hesitated for a moment, flipping open the binder to a single printed photograph.
"There's one more thing, Victoria," he said carefully. "We found records of a previous relationship David had five years ago. A young woman who worked as his administrative assistant and suddenly resigned, disappearing from public record shortly after purchasing a one-way ticket out of the country."
I turned away from the window, my eyes narrowing. "Are you suggesting..."
May you like
"The local cold case division has already reopened her file," Samuel said grimly. "Investigators are currently searching a property David inherited from his uncle in upstate New York. If what they suspect is true, murder won't be the only charge on his permanent record."
The net had tightened completely. David Vance had spent his entire life manipulating everyone around him, believing he was the smartest predator in the room. He had underestimated the woman he tried to destroy—and in doing so, he had signed his own lifetime sentence.
