Chapter 10 - A New Empire, A True Family

One year after the wedding that never was.
The Moretti estate looked completely different. The dark, imposing guards that once lined the perimeter were replaced by open gates and blooming summer gardens. The cold, sterile mansion was now filled with light, laughter, and warm music.
We were hosting a charity gala for the newly established David Vance Foundation, supporting families affected by corporate crime and injustice.
Children were running across the green lawns. Among them was four-year-old Emma, wearing a bright pink dress, chasing a Golden Retriever puppy I had bought her for her birthday.
I stood on the patio, holding a glass of sparkling water, watching her play.
"She hasn't stopped smiling all day," a soft voice said beside me.
I turned to see Sophia. She looked breathtaking. Over the past year, as she took over management of our philanthropic branch, she had grown into a confident, strong, and deeply compassionate woman.
"She deserves every smile," I said softly, stepping closer to her. "And so do you."
Sophia looked at me, her eyes filled with warmth. "A year ago today, I was terrified my daughter and I wouldn't survive the week. You gave us our lives back, Alessandro."
"No, Sophia," I took her hand gently in mine, lacing my fingers with hers. "You and Emma gave me a life. Before that day, I was just managing an empire of ghosts and paranoia. You showed me what actually matters."
Emma came running up the lawn, her crooked socks slipping slightly as she skidded to a stop in front of us, laughing uncontrollably while the puppy barked happily behind her.
She grabbed my sleeve—just like she had done at the altar a year ago.
"Mister Alessandro! Look! Sandy found a giant stick!" she shouted proudly.
I laughed, crouching down to her eye level, brushing a stray lock of hair from her face.
"That is an impressive stick, little princess," I smiled.
Emma leaned in close, whispering in my ear just like she did on that fateful day, but this time, her words carried no fear—only pure, unfiltered joy.
"Mister Alessandro?"
"Yes, Emma?"
"Can I call you Daddy now?"
I froze for a second, my heart swelling with an emotion I had never felt before in my entire life. I looked up at Sophia, who was smiling through happy tears.
May you like
I gathered Emma up into my arms, lifting her high into the air as she giggled.
"Yes, Emma," I said, my voice rich with pride and devotion. "You can call me Daddy forever."
