Chapter 3 - Sins of the Mother

While my security team dragged Julian and Isabella to the secure basement beneath the main mansion, I led my mother, Sophia, and little Emma into my private study.

The heavy mahogany door clicked shut, sealing out the commotion of fleeing guests and flashing paparazzi cameras outside.

Sophia was trembling so hard she could barely hold the cup of warm water Marco’s assistant handed her. Emma clung to her mother's dress, her big brown eyes looking up at me nervously.

I knelt down in front of Emma again. "You were very brave today, Emma. You saved me."

A small, timid smile appeared on her face. "Does that mean the mean lady won't hurt Mommy anymore?"

"She will never touch your mother again. I promise you."

I stood up and turned to my mother, Eleanor Moretti. She sat in the leather armchair, looking older than her sixty years.

"You said you hid something from me, Mother," I said calmly. "Talk."

Eleanor took a deep breath, her eyes brimming with tears as she looked at Sophia. "Sophia’s husband... David Vance... didn't die in a random car crash three years ago."

My eyebrows drew together. "David Vance? The former chief legal counsel for Moretti Logistics?"

"Yes," Eleanor whispered. "David discovered that Julian and his father were embezzling hundreds of millions through our shipping lines. When David threatened to go to your father, Julian sabotaged David's car."

Sophia squeezed her eyes shut, a silent tear running down her cheek.

"After David died," Eleanor continued, "Julian threatened Sophia. He told her if she ever spoke to you or the authorities, Emma would suffer the same fate. I found out six months ago, Alessandro. I was terrified. Julian threatened to destroy the family name, to expose old company secrets that could put you in prison... so I stayed quiet. I brought Sophia into our house as a domestic worker under a fake name to keep her under my personal protection."

"Protection?" I echoed, anger rising in my chest like a dark tide. "You kept a grieving mother under the thumb of my treacherous cousin, right under my nose?"

May you like

"I was trying to shield you!" Eleanor wept.

"You didn't shield me, Mother," I said coldly. "You almost handed the keys to my entire life to my husband's murderer."
