Chapter 6 - Sanctuary

Before heading to the tower, I walked out onto the balcony where Emma was sitting on a lounge chair, drawing pictures with colorful crayons on a notepad my staff had provided.

She drew a big house, a sun, three people holding hands, and a dog.

I knelt beside her. "What are you drawing, little one?"

"That’s Mommy, that’s me, and that’s you," she said, pointing with a yellow crayon. "And that’s a guard dog named Marco."

I couldn't help but chuckle—a sound I hadn't made in years. "Marco will be very honored to know he’s a guard dog."

"Mister Alessandro?" she asked, looking up at me with those wide, innocent brown eyes.

"Yes, Emma?"

"Are we going to have to hide again?"

Her question hit me harder than any corporate betrayal ever could. This child had spent three years living in fear because of my family’s toxic shadow.

"No," I said firmly, taking her small hand in mine. "You will never have to hide again. Nobody is ever going to scare you or your mommy ever again. You have my word."

Sophia stood in the doorway, listening quietly. Tears glistened in her eyes, but for the first time since I had known her, her shoulders weren't hunched in fear. There was hope in her gaze.

As I stood up and adjusted my tie, my eyes met Sophia’s. There was an unspoken connection between us—a shared bond forged in fire. She had suffered in silence to protect her child; I had fought in silence to protect my business. But now, we were fighting for the same thing: truth.
