Chapter 7 - The Estate Cleanse

By sunrise, the Morrison estate was undergoing a total, ruthless purging.

Julian stood on the stone back patio, his dark coat pulled tight against the crisp morning breeze, watching as a fleet of moving trucks and security vans lined up along the grand driveway.

Every single member of the domestic staff who had been employed during Victoria’s tenure was being systematically interrogated, dismissed, and escorted off the property. While most had simply been terrified employees intimidated into silence by Victoria’s iron grip, three of the senior housekeepers who had actively participated in Clara’s torment—delivering her scraps and locking the sub-basement doors—were handed directly over to the federal authorities on accessory charges.

Miller walked up behind him, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.

“The house is completely cleared, boss,” Miller reported efficiently. “The new security detail arrives at noon. All of Victoria’s belongings have been hauled off to a municipal impound lot, and her office has been sanitized down to the studs.”

“Good,” Julian said without turning around. “And the corporate restructuring?”

“Handled,” Miller nodded. “The board held an emergency session at 4:00 AM. Every appointment Victoria backed over the past three years has been nullified. Her shares have been frozen and seized by federal forfeiture. Morrison Holdings is completely clean.”

Julian finally turned around, looking at his chief of security. “Thank you, Miller. You kept this company running while my head was buried in sand. I won't forget it.”

“Just doing my job, Mr. Vance,” Miller replied with a respectful nod. “By the way... Mrs. Vance is awake and getting dressed. She asked if she could join you outside.”

Julian’s expression instantly softened. “Send her out.”

A few moments later, the heavy glass patio door slid open. Clara stepped out onto the stone terrace. She was dressed in a simple cream-colored cashmere sweater and dark trousers. Though she was still pale and thin, the vacant, haunted look in her eyes had been replaced by a quiet, resilient spark of life.

She walked over to the stone railing, taking a deep breath of the crisp morning air, closing her eyes as the sunlight warmed her face.

Julian stepped up behind her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her back against his chest. He rested his chin on her shoulder, breathing in the scent of her hair—lavender and home.

“How does it feel?” he asked softly.

Clara opened her eyes, looking out over the endless green lawns stretching down toward the private lake.

“It feels like breathing for the first time,” she whispered, placing her hands over his. “Julian... I want to see the nursery.”

Julian froze slightly, his arms tightening around her instinctively. The nursery—built four years ago, untouched and perfectly preserved, waiting for a child that never came because of the nightmare that swallowed their lives.

“Clara, are you sure?” he asked gently.

“Yes,” she turned in his arms, looking up at him with steady, unwavering courage. “We can’t run from the past anymore, Julian. We have to face it together. Only then can we finally begin.”
