Chapter 4 - The Architect of Torment

Julian followed Miller down the grand staircase and through the labyrinthine corridors of the east wing, entering Victoria Sterling’s private quarters.

The room reeked of expensive perfume and calculated deceit. Unlike the rest of the mansion, which favored minimalist elegance, Victoria’s suite was a shrine to her own ego—lined with designer clothes, expensive furs, and vanity displays.

Miller led him to a heavy walnut executive desk in the corner. The center drawer had been pried open, revealing a hidden compartment containing a stack of financial documents, legal certificates, and a custom-built laptop.

“We cracked the password using her biometric log on the tablet by her bed,” Miller said, handing Julian a printed dossier. “Boss... it wasn’t just a random act of malice. Victoria planned this before you and Clara even got married.”

Julian flipped open the file, his eyes scanning the dense legal and financial printouts.

“Look at the dates,” Miller pointed out, tapping a finger on a document dated five years ago. “Victoria was a minority shareholder in Morrison Holdings through a front company. When you married Clara instead of her—remember, Victoria’s family tried to arrange a strategic marriage between you two years ago—she lost her pathway into your corporate empire.”

The pieces clicked together with terrifying clarity. Victoria hadn’t just wanted to punish Clara out of jealousy; she had executed a long-term corporate takeover strategy. By eliminating Clara without leaving a body, she had insinuated herself into Julian’s life as the compassionate, supportive "family friend" who helped him manage his grief. Over the past four years, while Julian was distracted by grief and corporate expansion, Victoria had slowly maneuvered herself onto the executive board of Morrison Holdings, siphoning millions and rewriting trust deeds to position herself as Julian’s primary beneficiary.

“She was going to kill you next, boss,” Miller said flatly. “Once the final signatures on the global merger went through next month, your estate, your company, and your entire legacy would have legally transferred to her through forged marital and partnership clauses.”

Julian closed the folder. The paper made a crisp, deadly sound in the quiet room.

He walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the sprawling manicured lawns of the estate. The sun was beginning to set, casting long, bloody shadows across the grass.

“Where is she now?” Julian asked.

“Holding room B in the sub-basement,” Miller replied. “The state troopers are ten minutes out, but she’s demanding to speak with you. Says she has information about Clara’s medical condition that you need to hear.”

A bitter, humorless smile touched the corner of Julian’s lips. “She thinks she still has leverage.”

“What do you want to do?”

“Let her talk,” Julian said coldly, turning away from the window. “Let her try to spin her web one last time. Because by the time the police walk through those doors, she won't just be facing kidnapping charges. She’s going to spend the rest of her natural life wishing she had never learned my name.”
